a few days ago i got a new bag of oxbow timothy hay for my rabbit. it was very dusty and a lot of the pieces were brown, there were barely any good pieces in it. yesterday i noticed that she didnt seem to be pooping as much and it was a little smaller. this morning i got her a new brand called dumor, it’s still timothy hay and it looks much better than the dusty oxbow. she has been eating it, it has been around 7 hours since i switched the hay. there is a little bit of poop in her litterbox, but it looks even smaller. some are probably half the size of her normal poop. the only other change in her diet recently was that i started to introduce green leaf lettuce to her, but im pretty sure that this is because of the bad quality oxbow hay because my guinea pig’s poop also got smaller when we got the new bag. could this smaller poop be from switching hay brands or could it still just be like that from the bad hay? should i be switching the hay brand gradually? i wont be giving her any more green leaf lettuce until i see if her poop improves with the new hay just to be safe.

If she ate less hay for a while because the bag was off, she could have started to have some gut slowing and could still be recovering from that. Rabbit digestion needs lots of fiber to go in for poop to come out. I would keep pushing as much hay as she’ll eat and encouraging her to drink water.

I think giving some wet lettuce could be a good idea actually, because hydration is also important for pooping and could help in this case.

And it’s OK to switch between hays quickly. I think what you’re seeing is a delayed response to the bad bag, not a response to the switch.
