        Hi i have a year old angora mix lionhead rabbit and we found out she is allergic to hay (sneezing and watery eyes) so the thing is my rabbit lives free roam in my room and because the size is small the ventilation is kinda bad so my bunny will start sneezing badly once the allergies kick in. So to avoid seeing her suffering i got to shift her out of my room to the living room where it has a better ventilation but my mom wouldnt allow her to stay out unless in a cage (that she already bought and i cant buy a playpen type of cage) so is there any tips or advice anyone can give me?

        p.s the cage is a dog cage so it may be big enough for her to hop around atleast and we have a mat to prevent sore hocks

          A rabbit being allergic to hay is sort of unheard of — it is the main part of their diet (70%+ of what should be eaten in a day). I would have your rabbit assessed by a rabbit-experienced exotic vet for a potential URI or other ailments which cause snuffles and watery eyes. If it is from hay dust irritation, you can switch to orchard hay, which has been little dust and is a fine hay to offer 100% to adult buns.

          A rabbit cannot be in a cage. If your rabbit gets more room when in your space, I’d opt to keep the rabbit there and try measures outlined above to relieve the symptoms. A rabbit kept in a small dog crate is going to be at risk for many psychological and physical distressors.

                Are you going to a rabbit-experienced exotic vet? Allergies is a diagnosis when everything else is ruled out. Hearing that a medication “works” and then it “comes back” makes me wonder if this is a URI that needs a longer course of antibiotics. What medication are you getting each time?

                If it is truly allergies, you can give allergy medicine more long term, ad hoc, like children’s Benadryl, which could alleviate symptoms and allow your rabbit to have free roam space then.

                Again, I recommend switching to orchard hay to reduce dust.

                  yes ive been to two vets that has experience working with rabbits for advice and to check up on my rabbit. The first check up was last year and we also did an xray scan and the vet told me she has overgrown roots and because of that it causes teary eyes and sneezing, so they gave me flu medicine and antibiotics to help her. It worked for a few months and it came back again maybe worse because her left eye was more watery than before so they gave me a the same medicine as before and also an immune booster medicine for her. It worked for a few months again but like always she started having the symptoms again so due to that we looked for another vet that was further from our location. The second vet then told me to show the scan and they told me that my bunny was actually alright and it wasnt because of the overgrown roots but the allergies from the hay/hay dust as it is one of the common allergies so they gave me antibiotics and chloramine. After that it has worked much more better than the medicine given from the first vet as shes still going strong till now with just mild symptoms of sneezing. From there, I sun the hay given to her everyday and try avoiding giving her hay with alot of hay dust on it. I would love to switch to orchard hay but the price for it is quite expensive than timothy, plus rare rabbit shops that i can find does not sell orchard just timothy and alfalfa and the cheapest i can get online is about 2x-10x the price for a kg. sorry for the long message

                  I agree that since the sneezing responded to meds, you probably need a longer course and possibly a different med. URI’s can be very persistent and need a very long course of treatment. You can request a culture to make sure they are using the correct antibiotic. Another member recently lost her bunny because a vet did not treat a respiratory infection properly the first time.

                      I agree with the others. What you are describing suggests it is a URI that isn’t very responsive to whatever antibiotic you were using. So the antibiotic works a little bit, but it doesn’t clear the infection completely. Before deciding it’s “just allergies”, the possibility of a URI should be thoroughly exhausted. I would suggest asking your vet if you can try a different antibiotic.

                      As Wick said, you can give rabbits OTC allergy meds. There are a couple that are safe, but Children’s Benadryl seems to be the easiest to find and use.

                          alright i will try my best to research as hard as i can to know and prevent the uri from worsening. But as per the other comments ive replied i am getting quite a mix review from the vets so i might just go for another check up for a confirmation using your advice. Which children benadryl would you recommend?

                          Personally, I only have experience using the syrup kind. The cherry and grape flavors contain sucralose, which is a “safer” sugar substitute. Dosage is 2mg/kg. Have your vet help you calculate the proper amount based on your bunny’s weight.

                          @Wick
                          & Fable had a nice thread on it here: https://binkybunny.com/forums/topic/childrens-benadryl-tx/

                          I would still suggest making sure the problem isn’t just a stubborn URI. It looks like you had one vet tell you it was a tooth root problem and another vet tell you it isn’t. Tooth root problems can most definitely cause the symptoms/pattern you’re seeing. I know from experience.
