        Hey all 👋

I’m after some advice on one of my bunnies. Every now and again he ends up with huge clumps of poo clogged at his backside. It takes so much delicate cleaning and it makes me so sad that my busy work life means I neglect to keep on top of it before it becomes an issue 🙁

When we initially had him from 12 weeks old, we were told by the vet that his teeth would be an issue, but a year later, they said we had done a good job at correcting this (I don’t think the breeder fed them properly in early days so they weren’t knawing properly).

His front teeth appear absolutely fine now, and he is otherwise a healthy bun, so why isn’t he cleaning himself properly? I’m going to go to the vets to see if they can check his back teeth, but otherwise I feel like I’m missing something.

        Any thoughts?

My female had this issue, but with urine. She never had poo clogged. The reasoning turned out to be that she has arthritis. The vet explained that she couldn’t hunch in the proper position to pee, so she would pee on herself and she struggled with grooming, so it built up into mats. She’s on daily metacam now and it’s completely solved it!

Does your bun have long or short fur?

Also, can you describe his diet (how many pellets, what kind of pellets, veggies, treats, etc)? Does he eat hay well?

It could be that he’s producing extra cecals that get stuck to him, or he’s just having trouble getting them because of his fur. If it’s due to long fur, occasional “sanitary shaves” could help a lot.

Thanks so much for your replies!

He does have longish fur, he is a fluffy mini lop. I try to trim it as best as possible.

He eats hay well and has constant supply. Veggies occasionally as they don’t tolerate much very often. They have pellets, but we have been trying to increase them slighty as they are all coming up underweight. But this issue has been consistent throughout. I don’t give them any treats that aren’t natural veg. No sugary treats.

His brother and sister don’t seem to have many issues, the odd bit but nothing like the extent he has it.

Iv ordered some plain cornstarch as saw thats good and I’m going to grab some of the antibacterial powder for where his skin has broken 💔 🙁 but any other advice is gratefully received

Any chance he’s bad at reaching down to eat cecotropes/clean down there? Some rabbits are just bad at that, partly due to their particular body composition/face shape. That, paired with long fur, can definitely make things a bit complicated.

I agree, it’s probably cecotropes getting stuck in his fur. If it isn’t a diet problem, then there is one solution you could try… regular sanitary shaves.
