Hi everyone. Last night I got home from work and found a few poops strung together in my rabbit’s litter box. This is normally not a cause for concern, since he is a lionhead and frequently has some hair in his poop, but this was definitely not hair. It was a very thin, clear string and it felt like a plastic material. I have absolutely no idea where he could have gotten something like that as I am incredibly careful about bunny-proofing my room so he can’t ingest anything dangerous. There were lots of normal poops mixed in with this string of poops. It was 3 poops connected by the string and there was some clear mucus on it as well (maybe from irritation of his GI tract?). I opened a new bag of hay recently, so I’m not sure if it could have been something in the hay. I called the closest emergency vet that sees rabbits (3 hours from me) and they recommended that I just continue to monitor him and he will probably be fine. He ate tons of hay overnight and when I checked his litter box this morning, all of the poops were normal with no string in them. This morning he is eating tons of hay and acting totally fine. I’m very concerned that there could be some of this thin string left in his GI tract that could wrap around his intestines or cause further issues. Does anybody have suggestions or similar experiences? Thanks in advance!

I would continue to monitor. Rabbits tend to chew whatever they ingest meticulously. The’re not capable of swallowing chunks of things. The best thing for getting stuff through the GI tract is hay. You could give some simethicone baby gas drops – it is traditionally used for gas, but since it stays in the GI canal until it gets pooped out, it also acts as a lubricant.  It’s not absorbed into the body.

If you dissect the strung together poop – could it perhaps have been mucus that strung them together? Mucus as rule means theres some type of intestinal irritation, causing the gut to produce mucus as a protective measure. The mucus can be very stiff but it will dry into “nothing”.

Ample amounts of mucus can mean overgrowth of non-beneficial bacteria, in which case you should contact your vet (if it persists).

Thank you. I did “dissect” it and it definitely looked and felt like a plastic string, but I could be wrong. Now that you mention it, it doesn’t make sense to me that he would swallow a few inches of something like that without chewing it up into pieces, so maybe it’s not even a string and it is just hair or mucus? I feel like if it were string, it wouldn’t have gone in and come out in one long piece as he would have literally had to chew it before swallowing it, so I wouldn’t see it come out in his poop still intact like that. I have pretty long hair, so maybe it’s a piece of my hair? He’s eating tons of hay today and had lots of normal poop overnight, so I assume he’s probably going to be fine? I’m not sure how accurate this is, but I was thinking that since it’s been 12+ hours, he’s probably okay by now?

Yes, 12+ hours is great! A blockage would present sooner. If a bun is eating a ton of hay, I’d not worry too much. It’s similar to giving a dog asparagus when it’s eaten sth it shouldn’t have. The long fibers will wrap around the non-food item and bring it through safely. (Dogs do swallow stuff like socks whole, rabbits dont, thank goodness!) If your bun gets fesh greens, I’d serve them dripping wet for the next meal or two, extra hydration also helps with getting stuff through the GI canal.

Great, thank you so much! That’s exactly what I was thinking regarding the timeline for a blockage to present. He’s running around and eating like crazy, so hopefully whatever it was has passed and he will be ok!

That’s lovely! Running around and eating like crazy is exactly the type of behavior a bun owner likes to see!

He’s still acting normal and he’s eating and drinking great. He had hay, a few treats, and some soaked basil. I am a little bit worried because he hasn’t pooped since around 9 am, but he did poop a lot overnight.

Just clean the box and keep monitoring. He sounds like he’ll be fine!  Amount of poop follows their activity. Lounging = less poop. You’ll  learn your bun’s cycle, through observation.

That’s true, he’s been laying around for most of the day, so it does make sense that he hasn’t pooped since this morning- I guess that’s not necessarily indicative of an issue. His appetite is totally normal though, he’s eating hay and treats when I offer them. Hopefully he will poop tonight. I’m not even completely sure if he DID eat string, I just assumed that he did because I saw it in his poop, but I guess it could really be anything? I honestly feel like if he had eaten string, he would have chewed it up into pieces and not swallowed it whole, so I probably wouldn’t have even seen it come out in his poop? So maybe it was just a long hair or something else?

There’s no way to say really, but then the important thing is that he’s eating and pooping like he should now. The treat test (offering a yummy treat) is really great for determining if a bun has gastric upset. Whatever it was, if it’s come through it’s come through. I’ve had buns and dogs that ate the silliest things and they were just “Never you mind silly hoom, I’ve got better things to do.”

He’s eaten everything that I’ve offered him today. I just offered him another treat and he immediately took it from me and ate it all. I just wish he would poop!

Well, I spoke to soon! I just went to check on him and he was eating hay and he pooped! He likes to keep me on my toes. Thanks for the advice everyone! 🙂

There will always be a delay with the poop. They poop less when they are lounging and sleeping. When they become active again and eat more, the poop doesn’t just magically appear the second they are eating something. It needs time to make its way out.

As LBJ says, there is a delay. It’s normal! Just keep a close eye. and I think you’ll see poop soon!
