Hello!  I’m new here & have been reading a LOT.  I’m a new bunny mom.  I got the bun from a lady that kept him exclusively in a cage and fed him only kibble.  Until I get him neutered and litter trained, I have him in a pen so he can hop around and play.  He’s very close to being litter trained and his neutering is next week.  I have many chew toys for him and have also retrained him to a water dish, instead of the bottle.  I make sure his litter box is filled with plenty of hay and am also trying to wean him to more greens than kibble.

Now that you have a bit of the back story, my problem/concern is that Bunbun won’t chew on any of his chew toys and I’m really concerned about his teeth becoming too long.  Suggestions?

Thank you for giving this bun a home!

Does he eat his hay? Hay is the most important thing for his teeth. If he isn’t eating his hay, I would have his teeth checked out by a vet to make sure they are all in alignment. Since he was eating pellets for so long, he may need a dental burring to get things back on track. They can probably even check them while he’s under anesthesia for his neuter (it’s impossible for vets to see the back molars when the bun is awake, they have 24 molars in that tiny mouth!), so that’s good timing.

Chewing toys is more for boredom, if the teeth are aligned properly then eating way will keep them in check.

Thank you, DanaNM.  Bunbun does really well with eating his hay.  I have to replenish it, sometimes, twice a day.  I did, actually, find a toy that he IS chewing on!!!  It’s a yucca log.  I guess I just wasn’t giving him the right toys.

That’s great! Awesome he’s a good hay eater, it helps with teeth, boredom, and just overall bunny health.

And ooh my buns like yucca stuff too! They LOVE balsa wood but they eat it so fast I can only get them as a special treat. I just can’t rationalize paying several dollars for a small piece of wood they will eat in 30 seconds LOL

Another thing my buns love are organic palm plates and anything made of fresh willow. 🙂
