Hi there, I adopted an adult bunny from someone who was leaving town. I currently live in Penang, Malaysia. Bruce (my bunny) was eating Harrington’s pellets, but now it’s no longer available in Malaysia (not sure why yet) and I’m experimenting with other brands. Does anybody have any suggestions on a good alternative for her kibble? She seems a bit picky. Perhaps that will change soon, but any advice is welcome, as this is all rather new to me.

        Many thanks!

        This is Bruce.

Hello! I am currently changing my bunnies pellets too, but instead of them being picky it’s me, lol. I know oxbow, small pet select, and Sherwood are all good brands. I don’t know if those are available where you are though. You could try and add some herb mix to her pellets to try and make it more appetizing. Hay is the main part of their diet, pellets are just a small amount. Veggies are a bigger part of their diet, not as big as hay though. If she hasn’t had any make sure to add them slowly into his diet to avoid tummy troubles. Also, bunnies should be indoors, it isn’t safe for them to be outside. I see in the picture she is outside. Does she live outside? If she does would you be able to bring her inside? Last but not least, she is adorable!!!

Welcome and thank you for adopting this bunny!

Buns can definitely be a bit picky about pellets, especially if they are used to eating a brand that is more calorie-dense.

Here’s some info that will help you read the labels and decide: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Pellets

The main thing is to look for a pellet that has at least 18-20% fiber, so usually the first ingredient should be a grass hay (timothy is common). Also make sure it is not the museli type that has seeds and other things in it, as this encourages selective eating.

Does the bun also eat hay? Grass hay is the most important part of the diet, so as long as he’s eating plenty of that he will be OK skipping pellets for the time being.

With a new food, it’s important to introduce it slowly in small amounts, and be patient if the bun doesn’t want to try it right away. Sometimes they need to be offered it a few times before trying it. I had a bun that wouldn’t eat her joint support treat at first, but once I broke it up into smaller pieces she tried it and then learned to love them.

Also if you are new to rabbits in general, there is lots of good info on diet, housing, health, and behavior here to get you started: https://binkybunny.com/house-rabbit-information/

It’s hard to know what to suggest since we don’t know what is available in Malaysia. The link Dana gave gives good information about the nutritional analysis you want to see in a pellet.

Thanks for the advice! BTW, Bruce does live inside. I only let her out a couple times when we first moved, but otherwise she has the run of the second floor. She is still eating her hay and veggies. Radicchio and watercress are her favorites, as is kale, though I do try to limit the kale, and of course some carrot and apple, and when grooming time comes, some banana (I learned a valuable and messy lesson with too much banana). The comparison list is fabulous, and it looks like a couple brands are readily available. Bunnies aren’t so popular here, so I often have to wait for stuff to get sent here, which is where my initial panic started, as unscrupulous sellers are repacking different feed and selling it as Harringtons. I waited two weeks to get food she won’t even poop on.

I asked another long time Malaysian BB member. She considers Oxbow the best available brand. She uses Oxbow adult pellets for her bun. Oxbow  Pet Lover’s Centre sells Oxbow, but they can run out pretty fast, so she normally buys hers from Shopee.

                  Bruce is adorable!
