Hi! My name is Ellie, my Rabbit Joey is 4 years old (almost 5) and the last few months we have been trying to save him!  Back in late October of 2021 I found a mass behind his ear. He was taken to an emergency vet and following his regular vet. They determined it was an abscess. They attempted to drain it and give him antibiotics but it was not effective. The infection from the abscess had run so deep into his ear canal, creating multiple pockets under the skin of infection. The only way to get rid of it was to put him under and go in. He went into his first surgery mid November and it seemingly had worked. We spend every day giving him meds and rinsing his wound to ensure he would heal correctly. A few weeks after he was completely healed and after many.. many vet appointments.. it started to look not so good once again coming from the spot that had healed. The skin had turned dark and started to fill with fluid once again. I took him to the vet and he was given very strong antibiotics and I was instructed to do a heat compress on it 3 times a day for 10-15 minutes at a time. After about a week and a half his condition continued to worsen dramatically and I needed to take him into to an urgent appointment with his vet. (This was yesterday). After dropping him off for about 5 hours I got to talk to his vets, they believe doing a surgery as the first is redundant as it would be impossible to get to the root of the infection. His next surgery will unfortunately be to amputate his ear. They strongly believe he is so healthy other than this infection, he can live a long life and be happy. I am writing this forum honestly because I need help, advice, support, anything.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this – it sounds so hard and stressful. I’m no health expert, but if the vet thinks that he requires surgery to amputate the ear and he’ll live a long, loving life after this, then maybe that’s the best option, no matter how hard it may be. It’s clear that you love him beyond the universe… so hold on and be strong. It’ll be okay, I promise – no matter what happens. Sending love for you and your sweet bun, Joey! ♡
