› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Luna unwell, mystery illness.
It’s been a very scary week here. Luna became very unwell very suddenly and it was a struggle to get her the care she needed. I’ve surmised the week below leading to where we are today.
-Tuesday night, refused pellets, painful, very small poops (last poops), would eat hand fed grass or sometimes hay.
-Wednesday morning I rang and made an appointment at our vet but they couldn’t get her in until the next day at 3:45pm! Wednesday afternoon we made a trip to two emergency vets (after ringing about 10 clinics who couldn’t fit her in). Luna was lethargic, very painful, not eating/pooping, and her milky blue cataract turned golden. She received sub-q fluids, pain meds and gut motility, but the vet wasn’t comfortable enough with rabbits to do diagnostics so I brought her home overnight and I got up every two hours to feed and check on her.
-Thursday morning I phoned our vet again to see if there was any hope of bringing her appointment forward. No, but they said I could drop her off and while they couldn’t make any promises, they said the vet would see her earlier if she could before she went into surgery, and there were at least nurses on hand if she crashed. Fortunately they had time. Full blood work, x-ray, IV fluids, critical care and more pain meds were on board within the hour. I went in to see her at our appointment time and was told it wasn’t good news. Liver and kidney values were through the roof, no blockage but stomach was full and cecum empty. Vet recommended PTS but also said we could give her until the next day as she was relatively stable. Having seen her sort of listless behaviour before when my previous rabbit was dying, and not wanting her to endure too much I was unsure about continuing. But I chatted with my husband on the phone and we decided to try, at the very least, for Apollo’s sake. Thursday night was spent in a gruelling state of exhaustion and anticipation of the next morning, with every worst case scenario running through my head.
– Friday morning (today) I got the call that she was perkier, bloods had stabilised but not reduced. Our vet mentioned it looked like a toxin reaction, as it happens I’d found a dead venemous spider in their pen a few hours prior. We visited after lunch and were told she had pooped (after more than 48 hours without!) And she had chewed through her IV line four times that morning, including after they wrapped it in aluminium, so they switched to sub-q fluids. When they called at the end of the day to update us they said she had started to eat independently.
Assuming all goes well overnight, we get to bring her home tomorrow. While she is feeling better her prognosis is still very guarded as the damage to her liver and kidneys may be too severe to recover. If she crashes again once she is home off the fluids we are probably going to have to let her go. The fact that she is still with us now is nothing short of a miracle, as I’m surprised we didn’t lose her on the Wednesday night. I’m really hoping she pulls through, not just for me but for Apollo too, he misses her a lot.
OMG that is terrifying! I’m so sorry 🙁
Poor Luna, what a little fighter she is. Sending so many vibes for her and you that she continues to improve.

Oh Azerane, this is awful. Fingers so very crossed she’ll recover! I’m so glad your vet could fit her in sooner. Poor Apollo too. ❤❤❤
Good news from the vet this morning. Luna is still doing well so they are happy for her to come home today. Still two and a half hours to wait but I’m very excited 😁
There’s no way of knowing if she’ll continue to improve or not, we just have to do what we can for her and hope for the best. I already stocked up on some fresh veggies this morning, cleaned the litter trays and playpen, and will probably pick up some fancy expensive oxbow hay to try and encourage her to eat as much as possible 🙂 Apollo is going to be very excited.
Such good news!!!

I’m glad she gets to come home! 💗
Oh wow! So did they ever determine whether or not it was the spider? How scary! I’m glad she seems to be doing better and can at least come home.
Thank you! She is home now!
They still don’t know the cause, and her blood PCV (packed cell volume) is still extremely low, so she’s still anaemic. PCV should be at least 35%. Under 30% is considered anaemic. On Thursday morning she was at 18% and today she only increased to 20%. The vet said that it’s the kidneys that communicate to the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, so the poor condition of her kidneys is hindering her recovery.
She seems pretty good behaviourally right now, she’s hopped around, used the litter tray, eaten hay and had some grooming from Apollo. We just have to keep a really close eye on her, I bought extra water bowls and splurged on two extra types of hay including Oxbow Timothy hay. I bought fresh greens this morning.
Right now it’s just a matter of wait and see. We have a recheck scheduled for Thursday morning. I feel like if she makes it to Thursday, we have a really good chance. Getting there is the tough part.
Grooming and eating are really great, I’m so happy to hear she’s doing better, even if not out of the woods yet!

Happy to hear she’s back home with you and her loving husbun! Many continuous vibes for (((((Luna)))))
Thank you, yes her behaviour is really positive. When I got up this morning she was in the litter tray eating hay. Apollo has been doing binkies since she got back. He spent 2 days just loafing unless we were interacting with him.
Cleaned out both litter trays again this morning so I can keep a close eye on her output. Otherwise my other concern is she seems to be snoring more than she used to. When her kidney problems were diagnosed I was told that an increase in snoring could mean they were getting worse. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
It’s lovely that she’s eating =) and Apollo binkying!
Just wanted to add some extra details for my own reference to refer back to if needed.
On the Thursday Luna’s cataract had turned dark golden brown, with a reddish hint. The vet said this was due to the anaemia and she was likely bleeding behind the cataract. Since she has stabilised her cataract is lightening in colour again and was almost milky white this evening (Sunday).
Another thing the vet mentioned was that early on they were concerned about calicivirus (RHDV) due to her blood count and the bleeding within the eye. She is vaccinated but not for all strains. However they later ruled it out suspecting toxin instead.
Depending on the kind of spider, it could explain the bleeding behind the eye and blood counts. I’m not familiar with the spiders in Australia, but brown recluse spiders here in the US have venom that can damage blood vessels and cause anemia.
Yes absolutely, that’s my thought as well. Spider bite fits, I just can’t find any information about those sorts of bites in rabbits. Plenty of info about how they’re not as bad for humans as people think they are, but rabbits are obviously not people.
In any case, she’s still recovering well which is all that matters.
That’s absolutely terrifying! She’s such a trooper to pull through that… I hope that her condition will keep improving!
Good news today at Luna’s recheck. Her blood PCV is at 32%, which is an amazing recovery. She’s just shy of the ideal range but will be there soon 🙂
We have to wait a few days for her kidney and liver values to come back. The vet was impressed by how her cataract had almost returned to normal.
That’s wonderful Azerane!
I got a phone call from the vet today, it’s good news. Luna’s liver values are almost back to normal, and her kidney values have improved as well (they won’t go back to normal due to her prior condition).
She says we don’t need to have a re-visit unless of course she becomes unwell again. I’m honestly shocked she made it through this, she was basically dying in front of me. We’re lucky we were able to get her vet attention when we did. Both the emergency vet and our rabbit vet did an amazing job, and the communication from the vet clinic was above and beyond.
Wonderful news, Azerane!! What a fighter she is!
This is wonderful! I’m so happy that she’s doing fine again!
All your love and care, her rabbittude, and the good work of the vets brought her back ^_^
This is great! I’m so glad to hear she has recovered so well.
Amazing news!!! Yaaaay Luna!
