Hi everyone! I have a 2 year old neutered male lionhead named Mickey that I absolutely love to death. He was having some stomach issues today (gas, small poops, etc.) so I gave him 1 cc of Simethicone (baby gas drops) to help. He is so hard to give medications to because he is so squirmy and he flinches when you get the syringe near his mouth. I wrapped him in a bunny burrito and held him with one hand, and put the syringe in his mouth with the other hand. He doesn’t usually swallow the medication as I push it, he usually holds it in his mouth and then swallows it once he realizes that it’s actually in his mouth, hahah! I gave about 0.5 cc and he swallowed it and I gave another 0.5 cc after that. I always try to aim towards his cheek and not down his throat, but sometimes it’s hard because he is so squirmy, so it’s just a matter of getting it into his mouth. I let him go and he thumped away. There was some extra simethicone on his nose/nostrils and chin, so he licked it off, groomed his paws, and ran away. He didn’t cough, wheeze, or sneeze at all. I’ve read so much online about aspiration pneumonia in rabbits (and it looks like most of them don’t make it), so I’m SO paranoid that I somehow hurt my boy and he is going to get aspiration pneumonia and die. He is acting totally normal- he’s eating, drinking and playing like usual and it’s been about 6 hours. Do you think he will be okay? When will I know if he is okay for sure? I’m so worried 🙁

Considering the absence of coughing, discharge from within (as opposed to excess being smeared around), and general respiratory sounds, he is likely fine and didn’t aspirate anything.

You can see here for some more in-depth information re: rabbits choking: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/First_aid_for_rabbits#Choking … again, it sounds like none of the signs indicative of choking (and then at times subsequent aspiration) were present.

I also hope all goes well with your bun in passing the gas.

Thank you! I just checked on him and he is his normal crazy self running around and thumping and begging for treats. I gave him the simethicone around dinner time last night so I assume I would know if there was anything to be worried about by now?

He is likely fine at this point, yes.

Thank you so much, I was so worried. He seems fine and he is eating herbs and treats and playing with his toys. Is aspiration pneumonia pretty rare in rabbits? He also had stasis back in August and I had to feed him CC, Simethicone, and pain medications by mouth and I was SO freaked out about aspiration pneumonia.
