Hi all,  I was thinking about pet insurance for my 2 rabbits. Does anyone have it the US and have recommendations? Do all exotic vets take the insurance or just certain ones?

I’ve looked into it, and with all of my pets it was just too expensive based on the coverage they would provide. I used to carry it when I just had 1 bunny and my cat, and the one time my cat got sick the illness wasn’t covered, so I cancelled it! Last I checked there was only 1 company in the US that covered rabbits (I think VPI? but they may have changed names or merged with someone else).

We purchased through Nationwide Pet Insurance, in the US that’s your only choice. No other companies are offering rabbit insurance. The insurance company states they no longer write for wellness plans. The plans cover accidents and illness. My policy was $302.39. I got a bit of a discount for paying all upfront. They do offer payments per month, if you can’t or don’t want to purchase all at once. The plan pays 70% after a $250 deductible. There is a 2 week holding period after you pay. I can go to any doctor / vet. I pay up front and submit the claims. You can do it online. I think they have an app too. They do not cover for anything wellness related nor neuter/spay. I was on the fence, until my bunny who was on flat ground, hurt her leg. She ended up being ok. BUT it was a huge wake up call. Bunnies are fragile and one hospital stay would be so expensive. I had asked around, the plans very so much state to state.

Oh and they also give you a discount card for Rx’s you can use at Walmart.

My grandmother’s got pet insurance for her dog and it was a huge ripoff. He needed dental surgery which was covered but she was temporarily in a nursing home (she’s out now) when he needed the surgery. My family called it in for her and since she couldn’t come to them in person to ask for it (it was in 2020 right during covid), they only gave $500 out of $5,000. We ended up footing practically the entire bill.

We have had Nationwide rabbit insurance for slightly over a year, which was first offered as a supplemental benefit (not part of open enrollment) through my employer in late 2019; as I understand, we may receive a discount due to Nationwide’s agreement with my employer. We pay $11.99/month per rabbit (two rabbits) for what I understand is  a basic plan with a $2,000 maximum per accident or illness. Due to the Nationwide deductible we have never filed a claim, so I cannot comment about claims experience. However, most of their customer-service staff members are friendly and helpful.

Following the October death of our senior rabbit**, we adopted a new rescue rabbit in November. When I called Nationwide to add him to our policy, they attempted to sell me a policy upgrade with additional coverage, apparently a newer option. However, this would cost about $20 per rabbit per month; with two rabbits, I can’t really afford it and also don’t think it passes my cost/benefit analysis. Our first rabbit was on home hospice with twice-daily medications for over a year, and even her expenses were not especially high. In summary, we have the Nationwide insurance primarily to protect us from potentially high diagnostic-imaging and surgical expenses.

**Of note, following our senior rabbit’s death, Nationwide refunded the remainder of her monthly premium.

I think bunny insurance is a good idea. My bunny had to have x rays a few days ago which cost $350 plus just to have the vet give him a checkup it was $175 not to mention the costs of meds too. I think only nationwide covers rabbits.

I wish my employer gave the pet insurance option, even a small discount would help! I think overall, like most insurance, it could go either way and depends what it covers, etc. I’m not sure I’d put a rabbit through surgery due to low survival rates and the trauma.. everything is situational though so I may look into Nationwide. If it’s closer to the 12$ per month per rabbit, then still may be worth having even with a high deductible.
