I have a rabbit in an outdoor hutch at night. We built a stand for it so it would not be directly on the ground. The stand and the hutch were pretty high off the ground. Together it was taller than me (5’7). We have a privacy fence with a gate but we left the gate open because we had a bounce house being picked up. I woke up and noticed the upstairs of the hutch was pulled out and went to check. She was gone. There were obvious signs that something truly got her. We think it was a coyote but there are claw marks on the very top so I could be a big dog, but the wire was ripped off but there was no blood or any excessive amount of fur. I just know that she is gone… We looked everywhere for her and even put her hutch on the grass with fresh food. I’m hoping she will come back if she’s alive, I just don’t know how long I should wait. This was my first rabbit and I’m truly heartbroken, I blame myself mostly. I don’t know if rabbits tend to come back but I know she most likely won’t survive on her own, especially with it getting colder. If someone could give me a reality check or even some advice that would be amazing

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sorry to say it, but it sound like she was very likely killed by a predator. I had this happen to me when I was younger by a group of stray dog because my parents made me keep my rabbits outside. I was devastated.

If you think there’s a chance she escaped, you could try setting a live animal trap with some food in it, but given the circumstances I don’t think it’s likely that she’s still out there.

Again I’m very sorry for your loss. 🙁 I hope if you choose to get another rabbit you will be able to keep it indoors so it will be safe.
