        Hi everyone!

Our very active bunny started limping this morning and will not put any weight on his front foot. I assumed he had sprained something but I just found this really angry looking red patch on the top of his leg/shoulder which is quite swollen and causing the limp – please see below photo.

He had his calicivirus vaccine yesterday but due to COVID lockdown restrictions in Australia I was unable to go into vet with him to see where the injection site was. Could this be a localised reaction to the vaccine or could it be something else? Normally the vet gives the injection just behind the rabbits neck but this was not the normal vet that looks after our bunny.

His poops are normal and other than the limp he is his normal self apart from being a bit lethargic (although this could be due to hot weather we’ve been having at the moment). Any advice and/or experience would be GREATLY appreciated – all vets in our area are closed for the next two days and are not very good with small animal issues anyway. I’m freaking out.  Thanks

Lameness and skin lesions are known side effects of the Cylap vaccine. I know we have had other members whose buns have experienced similar things after having received Cylap. It might be that the vaccine pools under the skin at the injection site and gives rise to these side effects.

The most important thing now is to make sure your bun eats. You can serve his fresh greens dripping wet to get extra fluids in him. Dont let him get cold -lethargy can result in a lowered body temp, which is very dangerous for rabbits. If the lameness and lerhargy persists, obviously contact you vet when they open.

Oh thank you so much for your quick reply! Strange – he’s never had that reaction before to his vaccine but maybe because of the hot weather like you said!

Fingers crossed he’ll soon be fine again!

Having the bun not put weight on a front leg and swelling at the injection site is a side effect of Eravac and Filivac as well (not sure which vaccine you got!). It usually resolves within 24 hours (at least the leg favoring). Is he eating and pooping OK? Some extra fluids might help him feel a bit better too.
