        Hi all,

My bunny is almost a year old and he’s my first rabbit I’ve ever had. A day or two ago I realized he may be losing a bit of hair on his head, right in front of the ears. He normally scratches somewhat frequently and I think he is doing so more often now but I don’t know if he actually is or it’s just me paying more attention to it now.

I don’t believe there are any signs of mites. The inside of his ears are fine and so is the skin. However I think his skin is a bit dry.

Not sure what the cause would be. He’s neutered and I saw he might be bored but he doesn’t play with toys or really anything, he’s a bit lazy.

        Why the bald patches?

        How to treat dry skin?

How to entertain him or make him active?

        Please help!

        Thanks,

        Angela

Is this in front of both ears? I wonder if this is some sort of shed/molt pattern.

Yes, the first 3 photos are on one side and the last on the other.

It might be a molting pattern but I haven’t seen this happen before and he seems to be constantly molting lol

Do their patterns change sometimes ?

They don’t always follow the same pattern… so it’s possible. I’d say if you don’t see fur growing in soon, then it’s time to explore other options. Like Dana said, early fur mite infections can look similar.

Hmmm, it could be early stages of fur mites. It’s a bit hard to tell from the photos, but with fur mites sometimes the skin just looks a bit dry in the early stages. I’ve seen fur mites present first on the back of the ear, so the location fits.

Fur mites are often present on rabbits but never show symptoms, and then occasionally flair up for whatever reason. They are pretty easily treated with Revolution.

(Obligatory PSA: Never use Frontline or fipronil containing products on rabbits)

I hope it’s just temporary. He does seem to be molting (but when are they not lol)

I will keep an eye on it and hopefully the hair will grow back soon :/

                  Thanks for the advice!
