After many mysterious episodes of GI stasis and tons of radiographs, urinalyses, and blood panels, my small-exotics-only vet believes he’s found the root of Fuji’s pain: heart disease. Fuji is now on daily pimobendane; it’s a low-dose, for now, that can be upped and changed depending upon the severity and reoccurrence of her symptoms. My vet’s a very no-nonsense-no-false-hope kind of guy, so he didn’t really promise me anything as to how this will affect her longevity or quality of life. His nurse said the majority of bunnies she sees have heart disease anymore and, when caught before a large cardiac episode like we have, 9/10 end up living normal-length, fulfilling lives once diagnosed. But I am still sad and worried about the future, despite these episodes happening for well over two years and Fuji bouncing back every time.

So, I’m curious: have you ever had a bunny with heart disease? How did you manage? What helped? Is there anything more I can do beyond the daily medicine and rushing her to the vet as soon as I notice issues? Success story or heartbreak, I’d love to hear your stories so I can be as prepared as possible to care for Fuji for *hopefully* another six more flop-filled years!

I’m so sorry that no one ever responded to you. I hope that you and Fuji are doing well. I have not heard of a rabbit with heart disease, but my hope is that having an identified cause has been helpful.  I think focusing on the fact that Fuji consistently bounces back is good. Past history is most informative for the future– probably more than other people’s rabbit experiences!

For special needs rabbits, getting a routine is good, as well as adding in “checkers” too. For example, I make sure to do a daily treat to check on appetite, as well as checking hocks and teeth due to past hx with my rabbits. If you can work in those checks, it can help minimize worry since you are being vigilant.

Hi, how is Fuji doing? I’ve just been through a heart disease diagnosis/attempt at treatment and I would love to hear how it went/is going for your bun.
