I live in NY and we have tropical storm Elsa coming our way today/tonight. I’m not sure what the damage will be, but it begs the question: what do I need to do to prep for an emergency?

In addition to emergency supplies (critical care, simethicone, metacam, etc.), I’m thinking:

Extra hay, treats, greens (though those won’t last long if power is out)

        Bottled water

In case power goes out: frozen water bottles for summer heat and hand warmers and blankets for winter (I think?)

is there anything else that would be good to have on hand?

hi, I’m in FL and it just bypassed us. In my annual bunny bag I also have a container of pellets ( greens are hard. It won’t last long even if you relocate.) So the hay can serve as both food and litter, so I like a closed bag of it. But throw in a small dish and bottled water. A roll of paper towels and some folded or rolled trash bags. A zippered duffel or gym bag is pretty convenient for bunny’s stuff. Get the carrier ready with a soft cushion or towel in case you need him to sleep in it, but have a spare so if he pees in the carrier you put it in a trash bag, wipe it and replace with a clean one. I have a small boxed starter cage in case of long term evacuation but I have never once needed it, or had to leave. If power is lost in the heat, a wet wascloth wrapped around his ears cools the insides and helps his temp stay regular.

Pick a safe room (we use a walk in closet), put him in his carrier and take it in with you if the storm goes over your home. It helps to stay within sight and earshot of your bunny to keep him calm, but don’t let him out of the carrier until it’s safely passed. If you need to change rooms or leave, you need to be able to grab it and go.

Hope none of this is necessary. Good luck.

Wow this was SO helpful! I don’t think this storm will be too bad, but this question always comes to mind whenever Mother Nature throws a tantrum. But sound super prepared for every possible scenario and provided some really great tips! I definitely need to up my bunny doomsday prep and add some more items 😅

Glad to help. I realized after writing that I forgot to mention an actual litter pan! lol A small one, or a plastic pan like you use in the kitchen sink is handy if you evacuate.

Hope you guys are ok and didn’t lose power. His habitat is still the best place to be after the storm. (So climb in and snuggle your bunny.)

Yes of course the litter! Elsa is still over us, but my area is largely just inundated with rain. After watching the weather and the forecast I decided it would be less stressful if everyone stayed put in their pen. Had it been windy I would’ve moved rooms to avoid trees. But thankfully all is well here!

im not sure if this exists or is wanted, but it may be worthwhile to have a more permanent post about emergency care? That way people can to refer back to it when their bunny has a medical issue or there’s a weather emergency (more frequent occurrence these days). Just a thought!

Very good tips in this thread!

Some bottled (flat) water is good to have at home in case the water supply is compromised f ex by heavy rains. (Maybe you always have bottled water at home anyway).

Puppy pee pads are great to line the carrier with, or the litterbox. The bun might have to stay in the carrier for many hours if you need to leave the home, and disposable pee pads are very practical in such circumstances.
