My bunny has been suffering from scabs that formed post-op from her spay. I think it occurred because she was laying in her hay and not moving due to the pain of the spay, and the hay poked her which caused a scab that kept on growing. This has been going on for 3 weeks now and there has been no improvement. Now she’s going to undergo another surgery to remove the abscess and scabs. I just need some advice from anyone who’s dealt with this. She did not handle the spay surgery well as her pain tolerance is low. She wasn’t eating, drinking or pooping for a couple days and it was really stressful. I’m scared that this will happen again but I feel like I have no other choice than to do the surgery.

If anyone has any advice for post-op care and how to handle this kind of situation please feel free to share.

You mention her pain tolerance is low — was she and has she been receiving medication for pain management, such as meloxicam and/or tramadol? A rabbit who is in pain should be on pain meds consistently to better recovery.

Yes, she did receive pain medication. I just picked her up from the debriding surgery and they gave me meloxicam. She seems to be alright, she’s pooping and eating normally. She has a saline/sugar bandage on right now that will be removed on Wednesday that essentially lifts off the bad tissue. I’m praying that her wounds will start healing by then. Otherwise, I have no idea what I’m going to do. I’ve only had her for 3 months and I’ve already become so attached to her! Im finding it so hard to remain positive.

Lots of happy vibes to you and your sweet girl. I’m sure she’ll be alright! 😉
