I’ve been a bunny parent for over a year and have wanted to play more of a role in rescuing and fostering bunnies that need it. I’m a few hours away from my nearest rescue, but I’ve kept myself available for fosters in need. Recently, I found a craigslist listing for a young flemish giant being kept outside in a cage in 100 degree heat. I asked my shelter if they’d be able to take him if I transported him to their location.

Naturally, they were at full capacity and were unable to, but they said they’d set up an appointment for the RHDV2 vaccination on the same day and that I’d have to foster him for a week or two before they could find a home for him. My bunny has been vaccinated since July and I would keep the rescue isolated in a spare room, so I made the trip, got him vaccinated, and now he’s safe in the room.

I wouldn’t have done it if I felt it was a bad idea, but the pessimist in me is terrified that I’m endangering my own bunny for the sake of rescuing another. I’m taking every precaution by keeping them separate, wearing different clothes and gloves, and being as sanitary as possible. I’m trying not to stress out and just focus on how the rescue is better off inside and fed instead of outside in a cage.

Has anyone else fostered a recently vaccinated bunny while also caring for your own?

Hmmm, well it sounds like you have taken good steps, and the vaccine is very effective, so most likely everything will be fine with your bunny. There is of course some risk to it, but I don’t think you took an extreme risk since your bunny was already vaccinated. Are you in an area with a lot of active cases?

If you opt to take in an unvaccinated foster again, one thing you might look into is whether the rabbit can be vaccinated in its current home (and wait the required 2 weeks) before you move it to the shelter or your home. Of course if the rabbit is in a dangerous situation that may not be possible, but that’s what we’ve been trying to do at the rescue I volunteer at.

There were cases in my area a year ago, but I haven’t heard of an update. I also discovered last night that he has ear mites, so now interaction is gonna be impossible. I’m just doing the best I can and keeping him safe for two weeks.
