I found out something interesting recently that I think is an added benefit of the hay with some legumes or herbs mixed in (assuming they were grown in the same field and not mixed).
Apparently when hay has some legumes in it (like clover, etc.), it’s an indicator that the hay wasn’t grown with a lot of herbicides, because the herbicides usually target “broad leaf” plants. Now, that doesn’t mean that just because your hay doesn’t have legumes etc. in it that it does have tons of herbicides on it.
I was reading about how sometimes people have been accidentally killing their gardens by composting hay that was treated with a lot of herbicides and came across that info. I’ve composted hay for years, usually without any or many legumes in it and never had a problem though!
