        Hey all,

I had an annual check up for my rabbits and one of them (Brimrose, lionhead 6yrs old) is missing one of his bottom incisor teeth.

The vet said there’s no dental issues or health issues he noticed.

I’m a bit shocked, since his last checkup 2 years ago his teeth were just fine. I’m curious how he could have lost it? Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else’s bunny?

Did your vet indicate if there was damage? Is it that the tooth is completely gone, or that it is grinded down very low?

If the tooth is missing, I would be concerned about the future implications, as its top-tooth companion will not have something to grind against. Did the vet mention this at all?

It may have been dental disease that rotted the tooth and it broke off?

By the way it looked, completely gone. The other 3 are just fine, and the vet said his dental health looked great aside from that.

The vet did mentioned the problem going forward is that his one top incisor will need to be regularly filed down by the vet since it will eventually start to overgrow.

It seems like such a mystery to me, it was a bit heartbreaking to realize, especially not knowing if its something I could have foreseen or prevented… but other than that, vet says he’s a perfectly healthy boy?

He lives in a large enclosure with his companion Rorschach, almost an entire room that’s rabbit designated. Just has rabbit toys, cottentail cottage, maze haven, litter boxes, unlimited timothy hay which is his majority diet. I use storage cubes as panels to create the border, but I’ve never seen him teething at it or biting/yanking at it.

The only thing I can think of is maybe it happened with his previous owner and it was already on file at the other vet clinic (this is the first time I took him to this new vet because I moved) and I was just never informed?

I’ve had to build a lot of trust with him since getting him (he was aggressive and fearful), so handling and grooming him is focused on brushing, nail trims, ear checks, eye checks, I’ve never been able to get a good look at his teeth on my own before, even though I tried. But then his other incisor would have overgrown a lot by now…

This new vet was one that knows exotics like rabbits and hares, but the vet clinic itself is not exotics only. The previous vet I usually took him to is farther away, but is an Avian and Exotic vet clinic that specializes specifically in exotics only, no cats or dogs. That vet clinic recommended I take them to this vet since its closer.

I’m contemplating if next time I should take him back to that vet, in case there’s something this vet missed?
