        Hi guys!

My bunny travels very well: he is not scared, eats his hay, poops and pees in his portable litter box… except for drinking water. Whenever we stop I would give him water in his bowl – he refuses it. He hates water bottles, so that is not an option. Once we arrive, he jumps after his water bowl and literally chugs it down. I bring romaine lettuce with me which I dip in water and he would eat that, so he does get some water that way… but that is not a sustainable option if we are travelling for a longer period. I have a 3 hour drive coming up as well as a flight with him, so wanted to hear if anyone has a similar experience and a solution I have not yet tried? Would syringe feeding him water be an option? If so, how much at once?

        Thank you!

Giving wet greens during breaks should be enough, especially if he is good about drinking once you get to your destination.

How long is your total travel time?

I am mainly concerned about the long flight – it will be 8 hours on the plane and 10 hours in total, door to door, so I am afraid wet greens will not be enough for such a long trip. I’ve tried everything including putting a bit of apple juice in his water bowl to no avail… he would not touch it and would even knock it over. So syringe feeding water is my only plan for the flight. Good thing is that he is not fussy at all about being syringe fed his meds in the past so I suppose water should be ok too… just don’t know how much water at once and at which interval I should actually feed.

I just moved cross country with my four bunnies. It was 6 days of driving, with 8-12 hours of driving each day. None of them would eat or drink while the car was moving, but halfway through each day we would take a longer break and offer wet greens. I never syringe fed during the day, but did have to syringe and give fluids to one bunny in the morning and evening for most of the trip. Everyone else was fine though. Basically I tried to get something in their system every 6 hours (max, preferred every 4), even though it wasn’t always much.

So I think if you can offer him wet salad before and after the flight, and possibly during if he will eat on the plain, he will be fine. You can syringe either fluids or diluted critical care. I think a couple mLs would prob be all you would want to deal with on a plane. I just think syringe feeding on a plane would be a nightmare (my understanding is that most airlines aren’t allowing rabbits as emotional support animals anymore, so they need to stay in their carrier, I could be wrong though).

Since it’s only 1 day of traveling I think it’s less of a concern, because when you get there you can give him whatever he needs. I talked to my vet before we traveled and we made a plan for everything, so I recommend chatting with your vet too. She set me up with sub-Q fluids and pain meds in case any one got too dehydrated or stressed.

Thank you. Will definitely bring critical care, and ask the vet for any medicine we might need. If I remember, I will return here and update after the flight for future references.
