Hello, I’m new here and I really need some advice. My Violet gave birth to 4 beautifully seemingly healthy babies 13 days ago. Now, I know baby bunnies are shaky and have to find there legs. They all have but one. This one shakes like mad when it tried to stand up or move. When held close or she touched it stops. I do know for a fact this bunny is deaf. I’ve tested it. I am also hearing impaired so I know the signs. All the other bunnies react to noise where this one does not. I’ve done the clap/snap/drop test. Nothing okay no big deal to me. A bunny like me that is neat.  It’s eyes are opened but I’m not sure if it can see properly.  It seems to strange glue to figure out where it’s going.

My partner has left 2 messages for a vet. Called the 24 hour vet and left a message nothing. He is trying to book an appointment for today as I type. I’m going to up load a video of my “little evers” could you please watch and give me your thoughts. Have anyone been through this?  We are very heartbroken that we might lose this bunny. But I know that is nature.  Any advice outside of us seeing that vet is welcome as I said we are trying to get in to a vet that specialises in small need animals.

oaky, sorry but I have. To see how to upload the video. Again I’m new. Please bare with.

Please note I made slight revisions to your topic. As a reminder, the topic of intentional breeding is prohibited on these forums.

I’m sorry to hear about what’s going on with one of your baby rabbits. Since our forums do not permit discussion of intentional breeding, the experience of our members (including myself) is quite limited. We will likely not be too helpful beyond “Go to a rabbit-experienced vet”, which you are already on top of!

I recommend posting to rabbitsonline.net, which includes individuals much more experienced with baby rabbit health and care.

It wasn’t on purpose we found these bunnies in a box beside the rubbish in collection day. We found them mere moments before the lorry came. We took them in loved and cared for them and within a very short time less than a month and baby bunnies. I knew from the doe Violet she was going to drop. I was prepared. All went well. Until now. We have an appointment late this evening with a specialist. I tried to upload the 5 second video but it loads and then comes up blank. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. But I’ll take your advice and ask the other place you mentioned. Just hoping maybe someone has seen this before.

            thank you

Also, sorry for the many many typos. I would fix them but I can’t seem to to find an edit button on my phone. So, I apologise. Honestly, I’m doing several things at once while trying to take care of this wee one. So again, pls excuse the typos.

Congenital deafness is not well understood in rabbits. It could be tied to certain color/pattern genes, but there haven’t been enough studies on it. They know a lot more about the relationship between color/pattern and deafness in cats and dogs. This is an interesting article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4672198/

It mentions the broken gene (which is linked to Megacolon), but they haven’t confirmed a link to deafness yet. Coincidentally, I have a deaf rabbit and he is broken pattern. He is also a lop eared rabbit… so there’s that as well.

Why this baby bunny is struggling and appears to be deaf could be the result of something genetic. Or it could be a sign of disease. Mothers often pass things on to their kits. Sometimes, their body can respond differently. The others may appear healthy, while one is sickly. Some can become blind or deaf. One example that comes to mind is syphilis, which can cause deafness in human babies. But another disease is possible as well. It’s hard knowing since you found these bunnies outside. Whatever the cause may be, I do agree that it would be a good idea to have a vet take a look.

Thank you for the reply and for the article. This bunny is a blue and I thought the same as I know of genetics and before I noticed this issue as it’s coat came in I hoped it wouldn’t have issues. Seems my fears have become a reality.  As a side note it’s a lop eared.  I’m just waiting until the appointment rolls around and pray I get the answers I need. The poor little sod. I am fairly certain this isn’t going to end well and I’m prepared for that to a degree. My partner is taking it much harder. I grew up in a certain way of life and he is a city lad.

I keep thinking about that dog in YouTube “boogie” the Chihuahua that shakes like mad but has as a super happy life.

Thanks again for your reply.   All I can do until later today is love this little sod like nothing else.
