So the bunnies have ear mites. I’ve read on here that the ears shouldn’t be cleaned of any crusts because it hurts, and the vet did just that and Fresno started screaming. She told me she wants me to bring him back in a few weeks to get them cleaned and that he’ll need to be sedated. She said in the meantime while the mites themselves are being treated she wants me to try to clean the ears of all 3 bunnies and give them ear drops. Is this all correct?

I also noticed when I get home that the ivermectin they gave me is Noromectin which is apparently an injectable but they want me to give 0.05 ml orally? What?? Is that safe?

Aww poor guys. The recommendation about not cleaning is for at home, but I am guessing things are a little different when the vet does it.

So, I did a little reading on it and it looks like ivermectin is often given either orally or as an injectable for ear mites. Medirabbit (a trusted source) has more info and dosages, if you’d like to compare: http://www.medirabbit.com/Safe_medication/Anti_parasitics/Ivermec.htm

If you look up the concentration that you were given, you can calculate the actual mg you would be giving in a .05 mL dose. The “PO” abbreviation stands for “per os = orally”.

I know that ivermectin has oral (the paste) and injection (suspension) options but I didn’t think you could give the injectable one orally y’know? I thought there was a difference between the two and it seemed really weird to me. Seems like the equivalent of just swallowing insulin rather than injecting it which wouldn’t be effective. I’m a little put off by it and when I search “giving noromectin orally” nothing comes up 😕

The ingredients for the novomectin say: sterile solution containing 1% ivermectin, 40% glycerol formal, and propylene glycol q.s. ad 100%.

I believe that both of those other ingredients are fairly inert at the amounts that you would be giving, but the safest bet is to ring your vet and make sure they gave you the right medicine (because mistakes can happen when filling prescriptions).

In doing some digging on other forums etc, it looks like the injectable formula is easier to get the correct dose for a rabbit, vs. the oral suspensions made for horses etc?

I’m not sure that the bunny vet is available on Fridays but I’ll give them a call. But yeah I can imagine it’s easier as the injectable is 1% and the paste is 1.87 if I remember correctly. Just not sure why they would give me an injectable to give orally rather than just… use it as an injection the way it’s supposed to be.
Either way I hope it kicks in fast and offers them quick relief! I feel so bad that they have to deal with them.

Thank you, me too! They just can’t catch a break. Hopefully once I get this all sorted it’ll be smooth sailing from here.

Having a happy home and proper care is better than many bunnies get! I’m sure things will get better, the bad sometimes comes in waves but will subside.  All the maintenance and giving meds right now is stressful so thanks for caring so much.

Thank you Susanne. 😭 I’ve been feeling so bad that they’re dealing with this stuff but honestly they seem just as happy as ever, and maybe it’s secondhand placebo effect but I didn’t notice them scratching their ears at all yesterday except when I put the drops in which is fantastic. I can’t wait to get their ears cleaned and have them back to 100% (my wallet can though lol).
