My rabbits are indoor buns, but sometimes we go out to grassy areas to play. I always ensure there is shade, no predators, no pesticides, but now my concern is the bugs. So far I haven’t really encountered any bugs besides from ants, but I recently read up on fleas and ticks so I want to ask for your advice on prevention/whether or not it is necessary.

Some more info: we’ve been going out pretty regularly to the same garden area for the past couple months I’d say, I’ve never had any flea/tick problems before.

        Thank you!

Are you in the US? I know this isn’t your question, but I mention because there have been recent and spreading cases of RHVD, which is a very contagious and dangerous disease specific to and only rabbits. Although there are no cases in my state, our chapter of the House Rabbit Society is cautioning anyone who plans to have their rabbit outdoors.

Yes, RHDV is spreading. Definitely something to keep in mind. As for actual flea medications, Advantage and Revolution are safe for bunnies. Never use any products containing fipronil (ex: Frontline), since this is toxic to rabbits.

Are Advantage and Revolution treatment or prevention? Should I start applying it to my rabbits before we go out?

They are both. You can apply it before going out. Just remember that rabbits can metabolize these faster than other animals. So you may need to use it more a little more frequently than the directions indicate for cats/dogs. However, this will also depend on the bunny.

Nope, not in US. Should have specified.

I also found some flea medication specific for rabbits. I didn’t know you could give them medication intended for dogs and cats.

A lot of flea/tick medication is much more toxic than it’s worth.

Do your research.  Food grade diatomaceous earth spread over the area is probably a better option.

I’m pretty sure I hastened a couple dogs death by using flea/tick meds, so I’m extra cautious now.

Since we’re on the topic of antiparastics, I just want to stress that compounds containing FIPRONIL must never be used on rabbits. It’s fine for cats and dogs, but it can be lethal to rabbits. (I know Dana mentioned this, but since it’s so very important, I just wanted to repeat it 😃)

Advantage and Revolution (Stronghold in Europe) are ok for rabbits as well as cats and dogs.
