        Hi everyone,

A few months ago, my 6-year old bunny, Sebastian, had a bout of GI stasis. He recovered fine (the vet gave him meloxicam and gabapentin, plus probiotics and critical care that we had at home).

Tonight I went to go give Sebastian and Juliet their favorite treats. She gobbled hers up right away, but he refused it and went and laid down. As a bunny owner, we all have these alarms about our rabbits, and my alarm sounded right away. I went to feel his belly and I couldn’t really tell if it felt hard or not (last time he had stasis it felt extremely hard). I can tell he’s uncomfortable because he keeps changing positions from a hunched-loaf position to laying fully down. I gave him some probiotics along with 0.5 ml of simethicone baby gas drops to try to make him more comfortable. I’m sure he’s back in GI stasis. I worry about him because our vet is closed right now (it’s very late where I am) and I don’t know how long he has been feeling like this for (I know GI stasis can strike and rabbits can die very quickly).

I’m going to stay up tonight to keep an eye on him and will definitely be taking him to the vet in the morning. Please keep him in your prayers.

Update: after I gave him the dose of simethicone, he slept for a little bit but then got up and started nibbling on some pellets.

It sounds like it was just a bit of gas. A lot of bunnies will snap out of it if you give them simethicone right away.

Glad to hear you rabbit is eating. That’s the best thing for stasis. You can give more simethicone if necessary. You cant really overdose as it doesnt leave the stomach or go into the bloodstream. We gave our rabbit 1ml every few hours when she was very bad until the gas decreased and then 1ml every 8-12 as maintenance for a few days to be on the safe side.

Today he ate his pellets and a little banana, but later in the day he refused his favorite treats again. I felt his belly and he did feel a little bloated and I have him more simethicone. He slept for most of the day, but he’s eating and drinking again. I’ll continue the small doses of simethicone to prevent the gas and give him some relief. I can’t imagine how painful that is for a bunny. We as humans get gas pains all the time and they’re debilitating.

I know it’s awful for them. But also awful to witness for you. There definatley seems to be something going on when they are refusing hay and treats. I would ring your vet back and tell them it’s still going on.

Vibrations can help if you can buy a little vibrating bullet online which are small enough for you to slide under the belly. You can get them for a few pounds on Ebay.

Massage can help too. Very gently “knocking” the belly left to right you feel the bubbles disperse. Eventually they realise these things help and will come over for a massage.

Feeding banana when they have gas can make things much worse. I would only feed it to get a syringe feed down them if they wont eat at all. As sugars cause gas.

Encouraging them to move around also helps gas.

                    Hope your rabbit recovers quickly.

I used the banana as a “telling treat” of sorts, to see if he would eat it and he did. I give my rabbits banana as a special treat and keep it in moderation, as I know the excess sugar can negatively affect their health. I did give him a belly massage yesterday which he seemed to enjoy a lot. I gave my rabbit-savvy vet a call yesterday (he was eating, drinking, etc) at this point and she said to keep an eye on him, continue the simethicone if he doesn’t eat and if he doesn’t eat for more than 12 hours for me to come in immediately. We’ve been through stasis with him before so I know when he’s really not feeling good (he had it in February of 2017 and January of 2021).
