        Hi everybunny,

My little bun was neutered 2 weeks and 4 days ago but still goes around leaving little poops (seemingly just falling out from his butt) and peeing in corners (recently before the neuter, he discovered he also could go in the center of the room too!!). He has a big, grated litter box with a hay feeder that he goes almost perfect in when he is caged, however whenever the cage is open it’s fair game and he just goes to the bathroom in any corner or where he feels like it. Whenever he pees on the carpet I dab as much as I can with towels/paper towels and then pour a bunch of white vinegar on it for the smell (it doesn’t act as a deterrent to him whatsoever.) I also put all poops into his box immediately.

It’s funny because whenever he goes to a corner, turns around and lifts up his tail, and starts to go to the bathroom and I start walking over, he HIGH TAILS it to cage like truly RUNS. So I think he knows he is doing something wrong – hopefully proof that it is hormonal and not just poor habits. When I first got him he was pretty good and never peed outside his litter box ever the first few months, another hopeful sign that once his hormones kicked in he got bad and are sole responsible for the issue.

I know it takes 4-6 weeks for their hormones to level out but a lot of people said they started noticing change at 2 weeks. Well he’s just as bad as always. Has anyone else experienced this post neuter with their buns? When did it get better?

        Thanks friends!

Some see changes around 2 weeks post-neuter, but not everyone. In fact, I don’t think that is the norm. Sometimes it takes as long as 8 weeks, but I think 4-6 weeks post-neuter is standard.

I will also mention that neutering a rabbit does not guarantee he will come to be a perfect litterbox rabbit. My male rabbit is still pretty bad at litterbox habits, as a part of his personality and how he expresses frustration… you may need to do some training, as it may not automatically happen nor may not; however, being neutered does significantly cut down on that territorial marking though.

Agree with others, but you also might want to try expanding his space more slowly to see if he gets better about returning to his box.

If the room is very large, you might want to add an extra box in one of the corners he pees in the most just to make it easier on him (and you!).

Thanks everyone! So what I have done is restrict his space more (my apartment room isn’t that big to begin with, but now he is limited to about 15-18 square feet in front of his cage) however he is now peeing in a new corner within this area and still pooping everywhere so that unfortunately did not help. It’s almost to the three week mark and still no noticeable change at all; hopefully I see some progress soon. I do have to say it’s scary thinking about if he is just like this forever! My carpets are doomed!

That’s frustrating! But hopefully more time will help. You also might want to cave and just add a second box to see if that helps.
