I just got my bun last week and he is 5 months old. He was already on timothy hay and an adult pellet diet when I got him so I decided to continue with that. Moreover, the first day that I got him he was eating hay but the next few days once I started feeding him lettuce and 1/4 cup of pellets a day he has totally stopped eating his hay. I’ve tried orchard hay but he won’t eat that either. I’m not sure what to do, and how to get him to eat hay. Should I try alfalfa hay?

Hmmm, I wouldn’t go to alfalfa hay since he was eating timothy before. Maybe he’s filling up on lettuce? Sometimes a particular bag of hay is “off” and a bun with snub it, so you might try to get a new bag/brand of timothy and see if that helps. If you hold out a few strands of hay, will he take it from you? For some reason hay that’s been recently handled is more appealing for most bunnies.

Is everything else normal with him (pooping, appetite for other things, behavior)? Just want to make sure there’s not a medical reason. The fact that he was eating the hay before and then stopped makes me think he might not be feeling well, or it has something to do with the lettuce.

Do make sure to keep him eating something. There is a balance between trying to encourage hay eating, but not starving a bunny unintentionally.

Yep everything else with him is okay he’s pooping and eating lettuce and just loves his pellets. Depends sometimes if I hold out a piece of timothy hay he will eat it but after eating a piece he’ll ignore it and won’t eat more.

Should I try decreasing the amount of lettuce he eats daily or the pellets?

Pellets and lettuce are his main diet and I also forgot to mention that he isn’t really attracted to treats (fruits etc..)

How much lettuce are you feeding?

I would keep offering timothy pieces as often as you can, especially right before you plan to feed salad (so you know he’s hungry)

How much does he weigh? I’m thinking 1/4 cup may be too much.

He is 3.5 pounds and has 1 cup of veggies in the morning with 1/4 cup of pellets (5am) and 1 cup of veggies in the evening(5pm).

Since he isn’t a huge bun, you might try cutting back on his salad a bit (maybe go to half a cup twice a day) and see if that helps. But again, do monitor carefully because it’s important that he is eating something. You could also prob half the amount of pellets and see if that helps.

I Have a small Lionhead, I give him 1 cup of lettuce with 4-6 pellets 5am morning,  I fill a 1/4 cup of pellets and put half in a treat ball, some in a paper bag with hay and a few in a scratch and find box, at the end of the day whatever is left from the cup goes into a dish for him at 4pm, he used to eat hay and poop in his litter fine then I noticed him wanting to poop on the hay in the litter.  I hade switched his bedding from shavings to pine pellets, now I put shavings down on the one side overtop of the pellets and hay on the other.  I have a clothed hanging hay feeder and I have an oxbow tunnel on its end stuffed with hay all next to or in his box, I clean the hay daily and the whole litter box gets changed every 3rd day.  He now is poopin in different areas on the floor.  How do I get him eating his hay more and stop pooping on it.

I also am wondering how much hay is unlimited hay for a Lionhead, also lettuce and pellets is it to much for him? He eats all his greens and he is a pellet addict, this is why half of it goes in a treat ball, which I will add he loves.

he is getting snipped in a couple of days, poor guy, I have had him a month and so much has changed for him.  Who knew how much work a bunny is glad that I am home almost 24/7.

My boys are both 5 pounds (and 4 years old) and I have never fed them more than 2 tbsp since they were around 4-5 months old. At that point they would naturally go for the pellets over the hay. I would decrease pellets and keep the greens at 1-2 cups. My boys get about 1.5-2cups of greens in the evening and 2tbsp of pellets in the morning.

How much does he weigh? 1/4 cup of pellets sounds like it’s a bit much. I would reduce the amount of pellets. Otherwise he will just fill up on those and not bother too much with his hay.

The definition of “unlimited hay”? Hay should always be available, 24/7. Defining how much a bunny needs to consume per day is a bit trickier. I try to put out a “bunny sized” ball of hay at a time. But this is more to keep the mess under control than anything else. I refill as needed, which can be a couple times per day. If you’re not having to refill the hay very often then you know they aren’t eating much.
