hi i adopted my bunny nia a few days ago and i think she might be sick. i sometimes heat her grinding her teeth but im never sure if shes just purring or not. she only seems to do it when sleepy or when im petting her but its not super quiet. in the picture i attached i think she might be pressing her stomach but i am not sure. i think ive seen her hunching but i dont know if im getting it confused with loafing. she is eating and pooping normally and is active. i am a new bunny owner and i am just looking for some advice as i really dont know what to do. she is eating and pooping normally but i still worry she is sick. thank u to anyone who helps out

Rabbits can purr quite loudly when they feel very good and relaxed, for example when you pet them. I had a bun whose purring could be heard across a room!

When a bun tooth grinds from pain, there are other signs of discomfort as well. The rabbit won’t eat, it tries to hide away, it is highly reluctant to move away from a “safe” spot.

Tummy pressing can be a bit difficult to see, because many buns lounge in a loaf position, with their bellies against the floor. Belly pressing can look like the bun is doing push ups. The bun also shifts its position often in an effort to find a comfortable position to lie in. The discomfort comes from gas that cant get out.

If your bun is eating, pooping and is active, it’s not likely that she has gas.

You can get some simethicone baby gas drops for your bunny first aid kit, in case she does get gas sometime in the future. Simethicone gas drops is a harmless home remedy and can be used on suspicion of gas.

Those pictures don’t look like pain positions to me. Every bunny is different, but when my bunnies are in pain postures they will also squint and just seem tense all around. If you only notice the tooth grinding when she is sleepy or your petting her that sounds like tooth-purring to me. 🙂

If she is eating and pooping then I think she is feeling fine! It can be hard with new bunnies because you are still learning what’s “normal” for them, but all sounds good to me from what you’ve described.

She is beautiful btw, congrats and thank you for adopting!

I agree, some bunnies are just loud when they tooth purr. The pictures you posted do not look like “pain positions” to me. As Bam said, you would see a lot of shifting around. And when a bunny presses their stomach to the floor, it often resembles someone trying to do pushups but they can’t keep their back stiff.
