Hi, I dropped my rabbit (or, in more specific terms, he clawed me and jumped way too high) and his reaction was a bit weird…

He lives in a cage + large x-pen area, but he doesn’t like when I sit on the couch outside of the pen because he gets lonely. So I decided to pick him up and let him sit on the couch. He’s done this many times before, but then I realized the door outside the room we were in was open, and that he could be in danger if he got out. So I quickly picked him back up and began to take him back to his pen. But he got upset by this and began flinging and scratching, and he scratched a clear mark across my hand (I had to search the pantry for a big band-aid). I let go and he jumped into the air, thankfully landing in his pen. But as soon as we both had snapped out of our daze he began making a sneezing/coughing noise, sitting up on his hind legs and batting his face with his front paws. This went on for several seconds. I was terrified, trying to figure out what to do. I was so afraid he might choke. But after a few 30 seconds he stopped, and resumed normal behavior. He allows me to give him head rubs and feed him, like usual, but he still coughed a couple times. It’s over now but I’m still worried about it. Are there any injuries I should look out for? He seems to be fine but I’m still extremely worried. He landed on the covered ramp that leads up to his cage, so it was a bit of a diagonal landing, but he seemed to land on his paws and not at all in some weird position.

Sounds like he hit his face when he fell, hence the sneezing/pawing at his face. Try to have a look at his nose and mouth/teeth, look for injuries or blood. And keep an eye on his food intake for a while, if he injured himself he might have trouble eating. Is he breathing normally?

To avoid something like this in the future I would recommend you don’t pick him up unless you really have to. Maybe you can open his pen and let him come out on his own?

I agree, it sounds like he hit his face or even got the wind knocked out of him. I would check him over thoroughly to make sure there are not injuries and monitor him to make sure he’s still eating OK.

Thanks for responding! Yes, I have been monitoring him and he’s been the exact same as pre-fall, perky and happy. I checked his teeth and they seem fine, as well as his face, chest, chin, ears, and nose. I also do let him out on his own, usually, but the way the room is arranged and how the pen opens makes it difficult to still block out the places in the room that are unsafe to be in, so quickly picking him up is usually easier. But thank you all the same, and I’m going to see what else I can do about it!
