Hello! I have a male rabbit who is about 1 year old. I just got him to bond with the girl that I have had for a year. At first, I kept him confined while I wasn’t home because he was not yet litter trained. Now he is litter trained and I wanted him to be free range, but I have found several spots where he has chewed through the carpet and created bald patches. Now, I have him contained in an x-pen. Whenever I let him out, he chews incessantly. Every second, he wants to chew the carpet. He does nothing else. I am renting, so I have to make sure the carpet stays nice. I have chew toys for him, but he only chews the carpet. I am at a loss for what to do. I have no space without carpet. I know he can’t be confined all of the time, because he is not getting enough exercise, but when I let him out he constantly chews through the carpet. Please help!!!

You mention he has chew toys, but he is not touching them, which tells me he doesn’t see them as chew toys. I would suggest finding what toys work for him. My carpet chewer enjoys fleece blankets she can toss and pull against (I clip them to something so her can continuously pull and dig at it with resistance). With fleece, you just want to make sure they aren’t eating it. My Fable chews holes into it, but doesn’t eat the debris. Cat scratchers can be a good alternative, especially big ones that can literally go on top of a carpet bald spot. Tiles can be a good measure for already-established spots.

Yes, definitely put something heavy like a 12×12 tile on top of the dig spots. I’ve found that they help them “forget” about the spot. Finding something that your bunny will actually use and play with can be difficult. Sometimes you have to do some experimenting. I like Wick’s suggestion of using fleece. You could also try making a dig box, but not all bunnies are interested in burrowing.

Hi, I had an issue with my bun going after the carpet too. I put a shoe tray with newspaper shreds where he was digging, and did try to cover his favorite spots with things like suggested here. That helped a lot. I ended up getting rid of my carpet… But something else I tried before removing it, was put the foam playroom mats over top. They slid around a lot so not ideal, though it did help. If you could get them wall to wall so they don’t slide, I think they are a great surface for a rabbit since they don’t chew them and have traction, easy to clean, etc.  Another suggestion is just putting a different rug on top. I have a few natural fiber rugs too ( I now need more floor coverings since no carpet), and those work well. They can get a little pricey. They are nice because the buns chew it and seem to give them something else to do. The negative to those is my one ingests the fibers often has string of pearl poops.  She passes it fine as she eats probably 90% hay and drinks lots of water, but a rabbit with a more sensitive GI system could pose a risk there, I’d guess. With regular rugs, very low pile seems to also work OK but sometimes they chew on the edges. If you do that I’ve covered some edges with wood planks and held down with bricks, haha.

I have the same issue. He has plenty of chew toys that he loves and chews all the time, he has a dig box which he uses regularly, he has a huge 5 feet tall, 3 level enclosure, plenty of floor room, plus he has free rein of the entire apartment for most of the day, he gets plenty of love, play and petting/ treat giving and yet he still chews up the carpet. I block one spot, he chews another, I put vinegar, still chews it. And there doesn’t seem to be any behavioral pattern. I get it when we close his area when we leave for work. But sometimes he’ll just wake up, stretch, eat, drink, play with his toys and starts chewing on the carpet. I have no idea what to do, he knows I try to prevent him from doing it and that makes him want to do it more.

As an update, I’ve fixed those cat scratching cardboard pieces to old carpet and put them where he usually digs and tada! He chews and pulls on that instead of the carpet now!
