I know this is kinda a controversy topic but I watched a video earlier saying that pellets are actually considered bad for rabbits but in the same breath the person said to give more veggies if you decide not to give pellets and another video said flat out that pellets are garbage for rabbits. So are pellets actually bad?

Pellets aren’t bad. I think the misconception comes from pellets that were formulated for meat, fur or show rabbits. These pellets are not meant to be nutritious, they are meant to fatten them up or to produce optimal coats. As pet rabbits became more popular, these types of pellets were the only ones available. Fast forward to the present and there are several pellet brands out there that are formulated for house rabbits. However, a lot of people don’t realize that pellets should not make up the bulk of a rabbit’s diet. So the video you watched is correct in that rabbits should be given veggies. The bulk of their diet should be hay… then veggies… then pellets… then “treats” like fruit. Pellets are there to make sure the rabbit is getting all the vitamins and minerals they need (think of them as a supplement). You can do a pellet-free diet, but you have to be prepared to feed a WIDE variety of fresh greens to make sure they are getting everything they need.
