Hi everyone! So in August of 2020 I got a Holland lop from a little breeder near me. He’s super sweet. Recently I decided to get him a friend because he seemed lonely. I went to my local shelter and picked up a mini Rex mix. They told me it was a female, I know that male female bonding is the best and easiest. Tonight I got a closer look at the new bun and it turns out that it’s a boy! I am unsure of what to do now. They get along well through a fence. When I put them together and watch vigilantly to stop any mounting or fighting behaviors they are fine but there has been some chasing and biting. The other night the lop escaped his pen and they chased each other around until I noticed. No wounds, everyone is okay. Is it worth it to keep trying to bond them? Should I look for a different friend for my lop? It’s hard because I am now attached to the new bun too. Help me please!

So it’s definitely kind of hard to sex a rabbit sometimes, and mistakea do happen. I have a bonded pair of makes who love each other but you do need to get them both neutered before you do real bonding if they aren’t already. If they are, put up an extra barrier or something between them because the last thing you want is another escape and fight before they’re bonded!

Glad to know male male can work! The lop is neutered and the rex mix was suppose to be spayed at the end of feb because she wasn’t old enough yet. Now That I know hes a boy I can move up that timeline and get him neutered sooner. Thanks!

Opposite sex pairings are the most common, but that doesn’t mean same sex pairings are not possible. I would not rule it out just because of the sex. The behaviors you’re describing, like chasing, mounting and biting are actual common for any two rabbits when meeting, regardless of sex.

What’s most important is that they are both fixed and you take the time to thoughtfully bond them through the bonding process. You can find info on this in the RABBIT INFO section of the website.

Okay! I was worried it would just never work but I guess it can! the lop is neutered and the mini rex was suppose to get spayed at the end of this month because I had to wait til she was old enough. But now I know he’s a boy I can move that up. Thank you!

How old is the mini Rex? Just because it’s a male doesn’t mean you need to move up the surgery. Technically males can be neutered as soon as the testicles drop. Teenage hormones do play a role in healthy development though, so I wouldn’t necessarily do it immediately.

The mini rex is about 3 or 4 months old now. I think Im going to make a vet appointment anyway so they can check what sex it is and possibly schedule the surgery! Really hoping I can get these two bonded once they are both fixed.
