        Hi everyone

I used to hang out here when I first got my bunny and it was so incredibly helpful so now I’m hoping you might be able to help once again!

My bun is 8 and a half now and he’s been going really well. The last few months he has been getting a bit sick occasionally. He had an eye infection, then he had this kind of seizure, then he was hopping funny and he lost some weight. I’ve taken him back and forth to the vet each time but right now he has something that is stumping her so I thought I’d ask if anyone else has experienced it. Once a day normally in the late afternoon after he’s been sleeping most of the day he does a big cluster of odd poops. Some are regular poops, some are caecotrophs and then some are these kind of big, soft, oddly shaped in between poops. The rest of the day he poops normally (actually he’s been doing huge poops lately which makes me very happy.)

He’s had x-rays, blood tests, urine analysis and a full body check up including teeth. The blood test showed high globulins which for a while they thought was cancer but then my vet consulted a higher specialist and they think it’s spinal inflammation.

He’s been on Meloxicam on and off but I think the vet wants to keep him on it now. He had the soft poops for a while and we reduced his diet so he’s just getting unlimited hay (two types), one kale leaf, one carrot top (no carrot attached), one scoop oxbow pellets (she doesn’t want to go lower since he’s already lost weight) and I just give him one type of treat which is hay chaff mixed with a tiny bit of berry and baked. He also took probiotics for four days and after the four days everything cleared up and he was pooping normally. Now after about two weeks and restarting the meloxicam, he’s back to soft poops again.

Any ideas? I’m wondering if the meloxicam is messing up his system? Has anyone else experienced this? I’m reluctant to take him off it since the vet thinks he had spinal inflammation. I’m also not sure if it’s maybe not that big of a deal since he is doing really well apart from this one group of poops a day. What do you think? Thanks so much for reading!

Hmmm, if he’s having some spine pain, he might be having trouble eating his cecotropes. So it might not be the metacam causing the poops, but maybe his pain preventing them from eating them? If he isn’t showing any signs of discomfort I don’t think it’s a huge issue.

Has the vet considered E cuniculi? Just wondering since you mentioned the seizure and hopping funny.

Thank you so much for your response!

He is leaving some cecotropes in the afternoon, which I thought might be from back pain but I do see him eating cecotropes as well. These poops that I’m worried about are like really soft, mushy, wet versions of his hard poops. Sometimes they are crazy shapes or fused onto normal poops. I find them with a mix of cecotropes and smaller normal poops. It’s very strange! He is shedding, which might be contributing but I’ve never seen anything like this before. The vet is thinking she’s going to restart probiotics and see how he goes.

E cuniculi definitely could be a fit, it could even explain the eye problem that he had first. The vet did a blood test, which I would have assumed she was checking for that? I might clarify with her though, because it’s a good suggestion.

It’s so tricky when they’re older, never sure what is illness and what is generally slowing down. I just love the little guy so much!

EC tests are notoriously unreliable, so often vets will treat for it if there are any symptoms. The treatment for it is cheap and safe for the bun (it’s essentially a long course of dewormer along with metacam for inflammation). EC can often flair up when buns have a weakened immune system (like with aging) as it’s suspected that many buns carry it and never show symptoms.

Regarding the poops, sounds like could be a bit of cecal dysbiosis. Another round of probiotics is a good thing to try next. EC does effect the nervous system, so it’s possible that the nerves of the cecum are also being affected and causing the mushy poops.

It’s also possible that none of the things are related and it’s just been an unfortunate string of problems!

Thank you so much, you’re really knowledgable!

I have emailed my vet and asked if she had considered EC. He just somehow managed to leave cecotropes over half of my living room an hour ago so I’m hoping we can get this sorted out!
