I have two buns – Alfredo (4 years, male – little skittish and likes to mount other buns) and Theo (7 months, male – affectionate but no experience with other buns) – and I’m thinking about starting their bonding process soon! I feel like I’ve read SO many articles about bonding, and my head is spinning from all the different ways and conflicting ideas. I was wondering if y’all have any advice or opinions if I’ve been going about this correctly? Specifically, I’m wondering – is it too early to start face to face sessions? Should I do more time pre bonding or start short dates soon? I’ve heard conflicting things about stress bonding – some people say to stress bond ASAP and before bathtub dates, and some suggest using a large room – what has worked for you? I’m so nervous about the first session!
Spay/Neuter
Are your bunnies spayed/neutered? Yes
If so, for how long (for each)? Alfredo – for 2 years, Theo – for 1 month
Housing
Please describe your bunnies’ current housing set-up (living together, as neighbors, etc.).
They both live in a split small room that is attached to my bedroom. One half of the room is connected to it by a door. Theo moved into this room from an X-pen in the living room after he was neutered, so they’ve been side-by side for a month.
Bonding background
Did you allow the bunnies to “settle-in”? I’ve had Theo for 5 months, and Alfredo has been living in this apartment for 2 years.
How would you describe your bunnies reactions towards each other (answer for each bunny): shy, scared, curious, calm, aggressive, excited, affectionate, etc.? They haven’t met face to face without bars in between yet – but they have occasionally loafed or lay down 1-2 feet from each other. Sometimes Alfredo looks at Theo’s butt while he loafs. Once they were facing each other and trying to dig through. Mostly just ignoring.
Have you done any “pre-bonding” (cage or litter box swaps, etc.)? Yes, a few days ago I started switching their sides (and therefore litter boxes), and every other day one of them has access to my bedroom.
Have you started sessions yet? No.
