I’ve had my rabbit for about 3 months now. She is a free roamer and has unlimited hay and gets fed veggies twice a day. Normally her poop looks like the poop on the left but upon checking her litter box this morning I noticed pellets on the right. They are a tad smaller and darker. Should I be worried? She is still eating and drinking water.

Both these poops are normal and good. The shape is very good and doesnt indicate any gut slowdown. If the bunny gut slows down, you tend to see misshapen  poop and poop stuck together.

Darker poop can for example occur if the bun has been eating a bit extra fresh greens, because fresh greens contain a lot of moisture. Any change in diet will manifest in the poop. That doesnt mean that something is wrong.

It’s very good that you are keeping a close eye.

Thank you so much! I know it might seem a little anal but we lost a bunny before so now im overly careful and cautious. With COVID its twice as hard to get a vet appointment.

Well, it may be bordering on over the top, perhaps, but then again, it’s good to keep track. With time, you’ll become familiar with the normal variations of your particular bun’s poop, so you won’t have to be as super-meticulous with the recording and measuring.

It’s very good to take pictures of the poop  while it’s fresh, because it does shrink as it dries. If you weigh your bun’s poop it should be weighed when its fresh, because it dries and looses weight rather rapidly.

I meticulously recorded my bun’s fecal output when he was ill during the fall of 2019. It was useful when I reported to his vet.

I don’t measure my bun’s poop now, but I do keep an eye on size, consistency, color and amount, because they’re all important clues to the bun’s current well being.

It’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to bunny poop, in my opinion. 🙂

Have you recently changed hay? Our poops look more like the ones on the left with certain hay and more like the ones on the right with other hay. Both Timothy but the are differences that can affect poo. As long as it’s dry and crumbles easily and stays large it should be fine.
