Hi! I’m new here. I’m a first time bunny owner and got my bunny after falling in love with him(her?) at a pet store. I had done some research before and continue to learn new things everyday! I also know that it’s bad to buy from a pet store, but I fell in love and couldn’t let this sweet bun become an impulse buy for someone who wouldn’t give him their all.

Anyways! My question is, I went to the vet December 5 for Rummy’s first vet checkup. I had adopted him around November 26. The vet told me that he seemed around 8weeks old and that they “thought” they saw a penis which is understandable because I’ve read up that bunnies can be hard to tell the gender of when they’re so young.

Fast forward to now, and I’m very excited to be able to get Rummy spayed/neutered so I can get him/her a partner. I decided to check if testicles had dropped and there were none. So then I decided to take a look at his private and to me it kind of looks like Rummy could be a she rather than a he. I took a picture and I was wondering if anyone could help give their opinion?

        thank you so much!

It can be very hard to tell when they are young. The photo you provided does look girl-ish though. How is the profile view? Females have a very pyramidal shaped genital mound.

From the side it definitely looks slanted! Not tubular like any of the male photos I’ve seen.

Yep, that suggests a female too. I would wait a little longer and then check again to be sure. It becomes more obvious as they get older. Just remember, the absence of testicles doesn’t necessarily mean anything since boys can pull them up into their body. Testicles that are visible though… well, that’s a definitive answer. LOL

It really looks like a female but yes he’s real young so it could be hard to tell. Are you bringing Rummy back to the vet for another check up in another month? Maybe by then it’ll be easier to know?

Yes I’m going to give it another month or two and then bring Rummy back just to check and talk about the spay/neuter options and when we can do that. Thank you!
