Hi! Happy new year! My bunny jack is so picky and I have been spending so much money on toys lately and I need some other options. He is obsessed with the oxbow essentials timothy stuff, and he normally likes hay cubes and apple sticks but since those were the only toys he’s liked for the past few months he’s sick of them. He doesn’t like any other kind of woods. I tried stuffing paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls with hay and other goodies he likes but he doesn’t like cardboard so he won’t touch those either. I also got him hay balls and hay hidey houses or grass mats and he doesn’t like those either. I don’t know what to do are there any homemade options I can do or any cheaper toys ideas. I am in college and I spent so much for his Christmas on toys and he ate them all, typically I don’t mind spending that much every once in a while but if he likes it he won’t stop chewing the toy until it’s gone. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps he would do well with some baby toys? You can find inexpensive baby keys or staking cups. The hard plastic is considered safe since it would be unusual for a bunny to actually chew a piece off and swallow it. You want to supervise them will playing with such toys, of course.

I bought those for him too when I first adopted him and he doesn’t like them either, thanks for the idea though! I don’t know why he doesn’t like anything.

My rabbit is the same way, he doesn’t play with most of the willow balls, sticks, wood chew toys, stuffed animals, etc that I buy for him and when he does play with them he destroys them quickly. Thankfully he still likes to sleep in his cardboard hideout sometimes. 🤦‍♀️ The only way I can get him to play with his stacking cups is if I put his pellets in them. He’s very food motivated and acts like I starve him everytime I give him his pellets, veggies, and treats so I bought some other treat dispensers/puzzles online. I get foraging/herb mixes now and occasionally scatter them around his litterbox to keep him busy too.

He also seems to like to zoom through the cat tunnel that I recently bought for him. I heard from my rabbit rescue that their buns also like those cardboard scratchers for cats, and since my bun likes to dig and rip cardboard, I might get one for him to try out.

Have you tried just cardboard boxes or making things out of cardboard? I’ve seen tutorials online for cardboard balls and cardboard woven mats. That’s stuff that’s pretty much free to make if you have some boxes laying around. If you have the space, you could make cardboard tunnels for the bunny to run through.

I’ve also seen people clip up treats or veggies to hang down for the bunny to reach up for something to do. You could also hide them around and let the bunny sniff them all out. I like to look up diy bunny toys on YouTube and get some ideas! Just double check online to make sure the materials are safe.

Oh my bunnies also love to chew bendy log hidey houses. I think they’ve chewed off all the tasty red wood parts though, since they’ve been ignoring them for a while.
