› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Unsupervised Rabbit Accident! Please Help!
Hi everyone! I am mortified that I even have to make this post, but I need help. Desperately.
Backstory:
I currently have an 8 year old female Polish Dutch mix rabbit named Jasmine. She is unspayed. She is also arthritic and on medication. In a previous post I explained why she is not fixed. I know how irresponsible it is to have unfixed rabbits, but I cannot access a vet nearby that is willing to spay her at her current age. Trust me, I have tried. I take her health very seriously and would not leave her unfixed without reason.
Recently, a family friend was leaving town for the holidays and asked me to watch her 4.5 month old netherland dwarf rabbit named Fluffy. She told me he was neutered. I kept them separated in a room divided by a 2 and 1/2 foot tall NIC grid barrier for obvious reasons.
Emergency:
Somehow Jasmine (who is a senior rabbit and arthritic, so she can barely jump 1 foot high) managed to jump into Fluffy’s side of the room while I was away for 2 hours. This would be fine except that when I texted the friend about this (because I was trying to keep her updated on Fluffy) she said, “I have to tell you something…” and then proceeded to inform me that Fluffy was not, in fact neutered. Apparently she just told me that so that I would watch him because she didn’t want to pay for a rabbit sitter. I am absolutely furious with her for lying to me, but I thought it was plausible for him to be neutered since I’ve heard of netherland dwarf rabbits being spayed as young as 3 months. I guess I should have known better, and to have suspected she would do something shady like that.
Question:
Is it possible for Jasmine to be pregnant?? I am terribly worried. She’s 8 years old and all the internet sources I’ve looked at say that rabbits are beyond breeding age at around 4-6 years. Additionally I’ve read that male rabbits are usually too young to breed at 4 months.
Maybe I’m overreacting here but I need to be sure. Can anyone help me out?
BTW:
I’ve put the bunnies in completely separate rooms now. It’s not ideal at all because now Fluffy has even less space than before, but I’m fearful that Jasmine would’ve found a way to jump back in his side of the room if I had left him there.
I do not know if there is an “age cap” for breeding viability, but he is at a mature-enough age and she is definitely fully developed, so if she is still able to reproduce then yes, if they had access to each other, it is possible she is pregnant. Again, there may be an age-cap so other users can speak to this if they know. A brief google search shows some promise that she might be too old.
I don’t think there’s any way to tell if a rabbit is pregnant or not so early on after an encounter (sort of like a human pregnancy; no outward signs until much later). I would monitor for general nesting behaviors, like fur pulling or hay gathering.

To tell the truth, I’m just relieved no bun was hurt. I thought that was what thread was going to be about.
I think the odds are probably on your side but as Wick mentioned, it will be hard to know for certain until there is some outwards signs. And even then, it could be a false pregnancy. Years ago, a BB member said she knew her rabbits had gotten together because she checked the females genitals and could tell they’d bred. I think this is only something you’d have limited time to see though.
How is your friend’s nethie with being handled?
Could you check he even has his testicles? They can pull them back up but if he’s a rabbit that is chilled about being held, you might be able get an idea. Sometimes you can even spot them when a rabbit is chillaxing, lying down.
Just an aside, one of my now passed bunnies surprised me at 8yrs old also. I had had him since 2 yrs old and thought I knew his habits & abilities well. He jumped a door barricade one night that I felt certain would contain him. I came home from work to find fur in the hallway because after escaping the room, he dislodged barrier to another room & he and another single male fought. Luckily there was no serious injuries and they both took themselves off to separate quarters by the time I got home.
It’s a cautionary tale of how incentive changes when there is a few changes to their routine. In this circumstance, he was shut in a room he didn’t normally spend time in because I was allowing him become acquainted to a new rabbit (she was penned) who later became his bond mate. I cannot say for certain what triggered him to break out. I suspect he just wanted go to where he normally spent his evenings.
Do you feel the local vets have good rabbit care generally?
I just wonder if good idea to have some bloodwork done for her.
Oh dear, I would be very upset with that friend too. It is amazing rabbits can do when they feel like it. I’ve never had issues with buns escaping except when they want to “get at” each other. Then they can leap to ridiculous heights!
I’m not sure if the age cap means they cannot get pregnant past that age, it could also be the maximum age where it is safe to for them to have babies. I would also monitor for signs, but it can be very hard to tell until right before they are about to give birth. And my understanding is that if a rabbit does not have a litter before 1 year old, they can die during the later births as their hips fuse. So if you can, I would take her to the vet and try to find out for sure if she’s pregnant. If so, it may be necessary to do an emergency spay… but for the reasons you mentioned I really hope this wouldn’t be the case!
On the other hand, an unspayed 8 year old rabbit is very likely to have uterine cancer. So this might have actually prevented her from getting pregnant..

Thank you all so much for your help🥺 You’ve all made me feel a bit more relieved. I’m going to weigh Jasmine now and give it a week. Supposedly rabbits gain approximately 0.056 pounds during their first week of pregnancy. I think everything is probably okay? Unfortunately the rabbit vets in my area are inexperienced at best and irresponsible at worst. I will see if I can get blood work done if Jasmine shows any signs of nest building etc. in the coming weeks. I think maybe this was a false alarm, because Fluffy is incredibly young and I’m hoping even if something did happen he would be too clumsy to uhh… actually create a problem, you know? His male organs are visible so I guess he’s old enough to cause problems but like I said, I’m hoping he was too clumsy.
Also, this was a horrible accident that has taught me to A) learn how to say no to people and B) never underestimate a bunny.
I really appreciate all of the advice!!
Rabbits are masters at not doing something… until they do. 😉
I’m going with the others on this. I think your chances are good that it will be OK. But definitely keep an eye just in case.
There’s really no way of knowing if they even attempted to mate and I’m crossing my fingers that it didn’t even happen! Honestly I opened this feeling mortified that someone was going to be seriously injured. I have an itty bitty polish too and he broke into my 7 lb rabbit’s play area when I was not home and my boyfriend was in the other room. He heard a disturbance and by the time he got there the polish was seriously injured and seemed dead…I’m just so relieved nothing like that happened and I really hope she isn’t pregnant. I can’t believe that person lied to you…
