We took my two buns on a roughly 2 hour (one way) trip to take my buns to get groomed. We moved a few months ago and haven’t found anyone near us yet and they desperately needed it (molting). I mention this just in case it might be stress? Anyway, I noticed today that my 4yro female netherland dwarfs eye is leaking clear discharge. Then, while petting her, I noticed this soft whistle-y noise. Some of like if you rubbed a cleaning cloth on glass is the best way I think to describe it. She’s also been pretty lazy today, preferring to hide most the day but I thought it was just from yesterday’s stress. I’m not sure if my other bun is also having these symptoms (he’s not the most friendly so I can’t really handle him but he seems fine, he typically hides and she’s been hanging with him mostly today). I know Netherlands are prone to teeth issues and breathing issues because of their smooshed faces, and I know my Netherland, according to our vet back at the old place (we went about 2-3 months ago), needs her teeth trimmed because they are wearing unevenly. We had plans to visit a new vet in January (for both a second opinion and because they have the tech to do it), but should I be calling to see if we can get her in before the holidays? I had planned to wait to see if the weeping eye continued, but her whistle thing is causing me extra-concern. Thanks for any advice!

The whistling could be from a clogged nose. Do you see any discharge from the nostrils?

A worse case scenario is if the whistling comes from the lungs. It is difficult to determine the origin of the whistling  without a stethoscope and some stethoscope practice.

Buns can get bacterial colds, in which case the treatment of choice is antibiotics (there are bunny safe antibiortcs).

Another possibility is a stuck piece of hay. This is not uncommon and can cause inflammation that messes with the passages located in the face.

You can rinse the leaky eye with saline eyewash for humans and pat the fur underneath the eye dry.

I would try to have the bun seen by a vet before the holidays. If that is not possible, maybe you could get some vet advice over the phone from your old vet (who has seen your rabbit before)?

Thanks! It did. We got some antibiotics and the vet said it was most likely the beginning of a cold. She should be fine!
