Our bunny is 7 years old and we’ve had her since she was 4 months old.  We live in a 2 story house, and her litter box is in our first floor dining room.  She hangs out in our bedroom, which is on the second floor, but when she needs to use the litter box, she goes down to the first floor to do her business.  I would like to relocate her litter box for 2 reasons: 1. We are going to be replacing all the floors in the house and redecorating, which includes turning the dining room into more of a formal sitting room.  And 2. After all these years, she has started to use our bed as a litter box, so we want to get her accustomed to spending more time in another room of the house besides our bedroom.

I’ve decided to turn one of the 2nd floor bedrooms into a tv room/bunny room so I can hang out there in the evenings and she can play.  I would really like to move her litter box into this room, however, after all these years, I’m not sure how to get her accustomed to using her litter box in a different location.  We have a litter box in our bedroom with the exact same litter in it, and I also put hay in it, but she refuses to pee and poop there.  She will jump in to eat the hay, but any time she has to do her business, she goes downstairs.  Also, when she started peeing and pooping on our bed, I put a litter box on our bed with some pee soaked litter in it to see if she would use it, but nope … she wanted to go on the bedspread.

We now have a fence around our bed so she can no longer come up (yep, WE are now the ones in a cage!).  I’m hoping if she starts spending more time in a room where all her toys and hidey houses are, she’ll claim it as hers instead of our bedroom, and we can stop sleeping in a cage.

Any ideas of how I can successfully relocate her litter box?  I thought about blocking off access to the downstairs but I don’t want to stress her out too much since she’s been accustomed to this for so many years.

I think it would prob work best to temporarily confine her to the new bunny room area, possibly even in a pen for a few days, to let her pick a new litter box location. You can put her current litter box (slightly used) in the new area in a corner that makes sense and see if she continues to use it. Then you can slowly expand her space and adjust accordingly.

Once you open up her range again after the renovations are complete, she might still need a litter box in the old location, but I’m guessing she will start using both by that point.

The bed is a somewhat different issue and a common problem. Seems like the combo of the soft bed and strong smell of humans triggers bunnies to mark. Some people have success with putting a plastic shower curtain under a thinner blanket on top of the bed, which blocks the smell (so the urge to pee is less) and makes clean up easier in case they do. But you might have to block access to the bed or your bedroom if that doesn’t work.
