Hi there guys! So glad the site is back up. Decided to look if it was randomly and bam! Anyways my 5 year old Lux all of a sudden on her right eye the hair is a little sticky wet. Nothing too big or colored but it kind of worries me. We check her teeth and they look great but just wondering if this is something we should take her to the vet for.
Hi Xxventanaxx! Great to see you again! I can barely belive that little Lux is 5 years, it seems like just yesterday she was a little baby 💗
A weepy eye can have many reasons. Something can have irritated the eye, often a strand of hay. A tear duct can have become clogged.
You can first of all try rinsing the eye with saline eyewash for humans, then gently pat the cheek hair dry.
For a clogged tearduct a lukewarm compress made of a chamomile teabag sometimes helps. Soak a chamomile teabag and let it cool until luke warm. Squeeze out the excess water and place the teabag on the buns eye and cheek, let sit for a few minutes. Its of course easiest ro do this while she is sitting on your lap.
If it’s very watery (and not mucous-y), then chances are it is one of the things Bam listed. If it were me, I would treat it as though something got in her eye or her tear duct is clogged. If you don’t see improvement, then you can worry about other possibilities.
It seems like its gotten a little better and not too white. Its sticky clear liquid but today there was like a little tiny dot of white liquid that was kind of solid. I moved it out of the way like it was a ball of lint. Shes eating pooping and peeing and giving kisses and doing her usual silly things. She is 5 years old now and i have yet to take her to the vet since we moved here almost 4 years because she has been perfect. Thank you guys and I am so glad I found the site is back up and running 😀 you guys have always been the best.
also is there a reason why I cannot upload pictures? It says sorry you are not allowed to post pictures on this post.

oh i forgot about that. let me try

@bam what do you think?
im getting kind of worried. it still hasnt stopped leaking. Shes totally normal though. Little white stuff here and there but not every day. Like super little. Like a pin head needle. I dont know if I need to take her to the doctor yet since it hasnt been even a week but I dont know if shes in pain or not.
On the first pic its red,on the other it’s fine.
For a simple eye infection you can use fucidine (fucithalmic) eye drops. In some areas they are other,in other places they are prescription only.
If the tearduct is blocked, it might need flushing by a vet, if you have tried the lukewarm chamomile teabag-compress several times and it hasnt helped.
Other reasons for a runny eye can be dental problems.
But her teeth look great and she’s happy. Her eye def is not red I think that’s from the flash. What should I be looking for?
In this context, dental problems would actually be beneath the gum, so you wouldn’t be able to see it. What can happen is the root of the tooth (the part inside the gum) starts growing further into the gum, and due to the proximity of the mouth to eyes, the root of a tooth can actually start growing towards the backside of the eyeball, irritating it and causing runny eye as a result. You can see an example of this here, where the left is a normal rabbit with teeth roots at a normal, short length, while the right is one with very long teeth roots that are causing infection, breaking down the jaw bone, and also may cause irritation to the eye due to where the roots are growing towards:

An xray is required to confirm dental disease, if the teeth themselves don’t look infected. Also, as owners, we can only really see the rabbit’s front 4 teeth (2 incisors on top and bottom of the mouth). In actuality, a lot of issues can be in the back molars that are pretty hard to see unless you have the proper equipment.

Yeah I understand that with the dental problems but she would be showing some signs. She eats on both signs easily and so playful
Rabbits are very good at hiding ailments until they are severe enough. Many times there are other signs with dental problems, but not always. Some rabbits can tolerate some dental discomfort better than others. Just something to consider, as mentioned above, with other potential causes users have mentioned.
Is the eye still red and watery presently? If so, I would recommend going to the vet. It might just be something in her eye that she’s having difficulty getting out, but if it has persisted this long, it would be safe to get an assessment if there is eye damage, and as Bam mentioned, a potential infection.

Well her eye isn’t red at all. The redness is from the camera flash. But yes I think I will def take her or at least call.
It’s a little watery not much. Gonna try to tea bags tonight
Her eye doesn’t look that bad in the pictures. Just a little watery. What’s concerning is the white stuff you are seeing every now and then. Like I said above, a clear and watery discharge suggests something is irritating the eye. White discharge could be just a clogged tear duct, but it could also be an infection. Either way, if it doesn’t clear up with a little saline solution and a warm compress, then you will need to explore other possibilities. Unfortunately, tooth root problems is one such possibility. Speaking from experience, a rabbit can have “perfect” teeth and still have roots growing into the sinuses or eye socket. This may or may not cause discomfort when eating, it depends.
Ok you guys are the best. Going to try the tea bag thing tonight.
Did her first tea bag and took it like a champ 😉
I will say the fluid is no longer sticky which I think is a good sign but I am bringing her to the vet Saturday just in case 🙂
