I picked up a new foster bun named Hawaii at noon today.  I brought her back, she wandered around a tiny bit, and then I left her alone so she could sleep.

Right now it’s 10pm, and she still hasn’t really woken up and done much.  She came out to have tiny bits of hay, and came out to eat the veggies I put out for her, but then she retreats back to a corner of the pen and lays down.

I know that she might just be scared, but what concerns me is that she is laying down in like a “flopped” position (legs to the side) and ears down.  That seems concerning to me?  I thought buns only sit like that when they are relaxed, but clearly she’s not relaxed if she’s hiding in the corner and not doing much.

I’m worried maybe the hay I gave her is actually bad (I’ve had it for two months), or she’s going to go into GI stasis if she’s not eating much.  Am I right to be concerned or should I wait longer and see?

If she has eaten something I would leave her be to let her settle in. Laying down is a relaxed position. Does she had a hide? Even a simple one like a cardboard box should help her feel more safe.

I would try not to hover too much to let her adjust to her new surroundings. She will likely explore and eat more tonight once everyone goes to sleep. 🙂

As long as the hay was kept dry and wasn’t moldy I’m sure it was fine.

Thanks DanaNM – clearly I’m a worrier 😆  I do have a cardboard box in her cage but she seems to like to be next to the box in the corner better and then hides her head under a log hideaway.  I agree, she probably will be more comfortable in the evening when everyone is gone.  Thanks as always 🙂
