I have a problem behavior that I cant seem to find a solution to. Currently I have two rabbits, the older one Juniper, is more or less a model rabbit. But the rabbit bonded to him died.  Due to covid, I had difficultly finding an older unbonded spayed rabbit to bond with him, so I got a young unspayed one.  they have their own room, and have been kept seperate until she can get spayed, which is not for another few weeks.  Their enclosures are next to each other with a few inches distance so they cant touch. It has been this way for months. Juniper is quite relaxed and lounges often on the side of the cage closest to the other rabbit, and seems comforted by her presence even though they are not together.

The young one has developed a habit of launching herself from a sitting position to the top of the cage and hanging there like a spider monkey, before letting go and dropping. It’s quite loud, and happens every night. I have tried covering the cage, did not work. I have experimented with the time she is out in house for exercise to see if this alters her behavior, and it has not.  I can leave her out for 9 hours or 1, and she still continues this behavior every night. I have tried different toys in her cage at night, and she still continues.  I have tried a calming pet diffuser for rabbits, nothing.  I am hoping its largely due to hormones developing, and she will calm down once shes able to be bonded with the other rabbit, but I need a fix until then.  I feel like its attention seeking behavior, as she is quite demanding out of her cage. she wants to be held and petted, and will follow me around constantly.

Spider bun! Haha! Unfortunately, this isn’t unusual. The good news is she will literally grow out of this. Once they reach a certain size, it just doesn’t work anymore. And yes, spaying her will also help calm her down.

LOL!! They are our little mischief-makers, aren’t they? 😆

Spaying should help calm this behavior down, however, it may just be a part of her personality. I have three rabbits, all spayed, and two of them love jumping up on things. 😆 So, they are definitely living proof that spaying sometimes does not take away their love for heights. 😉

Do you have any boxes? Sometimes taking a box and putting it next to that area can help make it harder for them to reach that destination. I hear you though, they can get quite loud when they jump. Maybe you could get her some large stuffed animals to jump onto to satisfy that urge to climb; while making it noiseless. 🙂

Wishing you luck, and an easy bond! 😉

Did I read that right in that she’s hanging upside down from the inside of her cage ceiling? wow! LOL I’m impressed.

I wonder if you could zip tie a piece of cardboard to the inner roof of the cage where she is grabbing on, so she can’t actually hang on to anything?

I tried attaching cardboard over the bars. Shes some sort of wizard, and manages to get little paw holds on the few places not covered. shes also doing it right where the door is, and I cant put a lot there to block because the door wouldn’t open otherwise.  I had attempted to tie a blanket on the inside to literally lower the ceiling so she couldnt jump and create a soft barrier, but since I cant tie it to the side with the door, she just would jump at the small gap and climb onto the blanket then get stuck. She’s supposed to be half french lop, 1/2 continental giant, but I swear she’s got super powers.

Would it be a deterrent if you cut pieces of fabric and tied them (so they are hanging like icicles; not creating loops to hang onto) all over the ceiling of the cage? I’m just thinking of visual distractors that make the ceiling less of an inviting place to crash into.
