Hi! I want to introduce my bunny Hades to our house cat (who is 14 & super chill), but I’ve been waiting to introduce them until I can get Hades fixed. He (knock on wood) hasn’t displayed ANY territorial behaviors such as peeing on things. (He pees only in his litter box bc he knows he gets pellets when he does. Lol) I don’t want him to start displaying territorial behaviors (like marking/peeing on things) because of meeting Maddie (the cat) so I’ve been waiting til we can do the neuter. But do you think that I’m making a good call by waiting, or should I just introduce them already? He’s 5 months old now. I want to introduce them when he’s “still a baby” so it can be a formative experience (“cats are friends”).  His neuter is 1 month from now (he’ll be 6 months old) and I’ve heard the territorial-type hormones probably won’t leave his system for a month ish. Should I wait to intro them til he’s 7 months old, or just go for it? Thanks for any insight!

There is a risk he could get infatuated with the cat. I had an unneutered rabbit who developped a crush on my dog, after they’d been living in the same household for a whole year. It stopped after I had the bun neutered, but it was rather problematic while it was going on. He would pee-and poopmark on the sofa, and he pursued the dog relentlessly. She was a very gentle soul, but she didnt enjoy being circled and peed on and nippped for attention. It was very stressful for the bun too, he barely got any rest.

If your rabbit and cat are living in the same household, they know of each other’s presences. Rabbits and cats have very keen sense of smell.  So I dont think your rabbit will perceive your cat as sth bad even if you wait until after his neuter with introduction.

I have never had a cat (sadly, Im allergic), but we have several members who have a cat and buns, f ex moderator Dana, so Im sure you will get good tips on safe intro from people with hands-on experience 🙂

@Bam this is really helpful, thank you so much! Sounds like basically if I intro them now, Hades could possibly get a crush on Maddie and start up with the peeing/pooping/being generally flirty and obnoxious lol 😆 I’ll wait til he’s neutered, then!

I have experience introducing my previous bunny (Persephone – may she rest in peace as she watches over the Bunderworld in Hades’ absence) to 3 or 4 different cats. 🙂 Slow & steady, supervision, have a carrier or barrier set up, etc etc. I’m on it! But y’all feel free to chime in if you have any protips I might not be aware of that are super useful.

            Thanks!

Never had any real experience with un-neutered buns and cats, but agree with your strategy on just slow introductions and lots of supervision at first. I didn’t really do anything too special with mine, but with new buns I like to let the buns out to explore when the cat is most sleepy. I also make sure to play with my cat when he is getting zoomies or “crazy eyes” as I call them, so he doesn’t decide to chase a bunny instead of a toy.
