Hello all, I haven’t posted in a while but recently my 6yr old Holland Lop, Pascal, has been having worse grooming issues. He is slightly overweight and has never been good about grooming himself but the most recent time he had a few bad mattes, and has had poop getting caught up in his endless shedding. He is on a diet and is by no means a lazy boy but the mattes have me worried.

I know there are a lot of bunny experts on here and a few vets as well so I’m asking, should we take Pascal to a vet and get his undercarriage shaved?

I’m only concerned because he is an older boy and would like a second opinion before I stress him out with a vet visit.

A sanitary shave could help him get back on track with his grooming. I think sometimes when they get matted it just overwhelms the poor bun. Plus having waste stuck on puts them at risk for fly strike etc.

They also might be able to help address whether there is an underlying medical problem that is preventing him from grooming properly (maybe a touch of arthritis or diet tweak is needed).

So I think my vote would be yes, talk to your vet about it and see what they think.

I agree. A shave down there may help him get back on track.

Thanks for the advice, sorry I’m just now responding (I thought I already had).

Pascal has an appointment tomorrow morning for an exam and a sanitary shave. Hoping all goes well!
