How do I stop my rabbit from digging up the grass? My two rabbits have a bunny run that they share in which I purchase sod to place in the bunny run. One bunny keeps digging up the sod. How do I stop the behavior? Or what can I use for a substitute in place of the sod? Will they still dig if I was to place pebbles there?

The only thing I can think of that would really work would be to secure a piece of wire mesh over the sod, so the grass could poke up through it but they couldn’t dig.

But… digging is a very enriching activity for bunnies, and I think one of the benefits of giving them outdoor access. So maybe they would be happier if allowed to dig?

A rabbit that’s very interested in digging would probably dig in pebbles too, but it would be a lot less nice and much harder on the paws. You could perhaps cover part of the grass with metal netting (the grass will soon grow through so its ok to have a wire bottom run if its placed in direct contact with the grass), and keep a little bit free for digging? Preferably a foot or two from the sides of the run, because you obviously don’t want your buns to dig their way out of the run.

As Dana says, digging is highly enriching for rabbits. They are genetically predisposed towards digging, and its very fulfilling for them to get the chance to dig.

Perhaps you can redirect that energy into a dig box or something. Like hey, I can dig here all I want and my owner doesn’t stop me!
