Hello everyone! BB8 recently had his molars trimmed(on the 21st) and he’s been doing well but he hasn’t been eating as much hay now than as he did before the procedure. The second day he came home he started to act normally and eat everything else with his normal gusto except his hay. He does eat hay but only small amounts. I called the vet’s office but the vet wasn’t in and the vet tech said this was normal because his mouth is sore(he is on metacam for the pain) and it might take him some time to go back to eating normally. Ah but how much time? When should I start to become concerned that he’s not eating enough hay?

I’m so relieved BB8 is doing well but his hay shyness does have me a bit worried.

I’ve never had any of my rabbit’s teeth trimmed before so I’m just not sure when this goes from just normal behavior to when it becomes concerning symptoms. Another question I had is are softer hays preferred after molar trimming? I saw a brief mention online that softer hays after teeth trimming are easier for rabbits to chew but I couldn’t find anything else about this. Right now he’s on rabbit hole coarse timothy hay.

And is there anything else I should know post molar trimming care? I really appreciate any help, thank you! Sorry for any typos or if I phrased any questions strangely, it’s been a long and stressful couple of weeks! I hope everyone has been well! It’s been a while since I’ve been on binkybunny! <3

          Hi and welcome back ☺

I would try softer hay. Its good that you have meloxicam. There are no special things to do post a molar trimming, but how soon the rabbit returns to normal is highly individual. Is he eating other food than hay?

Thank you! I got him some orchard grass hay and also some hay cubes to try. He is eating everything just not as much hay as he usually did before the trimming. He seems to really love the hay cubes though and has started to eat more hay! 🙂 Thanks again!

I agree with can take some time, but it will vary by individual and how much trimming was done. If he’s eating everything else, then I wouldn’t be too worried yet. Give him a week or two. And, as Bam suggested, try a softer hay like orchard grass.
