Our 5 year old female mini rex named Rosie is missing hair in a strange shape along her back and we don’t know why! We regularly pluck her loose hairs when she sheds so she doesn’t eat it of course, and a few days ago she had one on her back, so my sister plucked it. She said it created a strange circle of hair missing down to a fuzzy layer on her skin, but she could keep pulling it and it kept sort of ‘unwinding’ out around the perimeter of the spot. She doesn’t seem to hurt when we touch the hole but if we pull at the surrounding hairs (that are loose, we’re not pulling out healthy hair) she jumps and runs away so it may be sensitive. She doesn’t seem to pay much mind to it otherwise, no excessive cleaning or scratching so I don’t suspect mites or parasites (no skin irritation either I think). It just looks rather extreme and like I said I feel like if I keep pulling around the perimeter of the bald spot I’d be able to just unwind her which doesn’t make any sense. Does anyone know what could possibly cause this spot? Is it just normal shedding? She’s never had this much hair come out before.

Looks like normal shedding to me. My Rex girl had patches like that a bit ago but they just grow back. Mine doesn’t like her tufts pulled either, it doesn’t hurt but I think it’s more so just annoying. Also just so you know, you probably haven’t gotten any responses yet because the “technical stuff” section is for computer and forum function related issues. I would have probably put this under “House Rabbit Q &A”.

Rabbits can shed in patches, without anything being wrong. As long as the skin is nice and smooth, not inflamed, red, scabbed or overly dandruffy, this is nothing to worry about. Within 1-2 weeks you’ll see new growth of hair, like a fine peachy fuzz.

I’ll see if we can move this thread!

Hi, thanks for your response! That makes me feel better about it. This is my first post so I didn’t know that but thanks for informing me about the sections.

This happened to my bunny too! The bald spot grew bigger and new fur started coming in. It’s probably just shedding, but if you do notice other things take her to the vet.

My foster bun basically had the exact same bald spot in the exact same location and it turned out to be shedding as well (I also made a worried post on it a few months ago haha).  Don’t be too worried if a few more spots come up as long as in a week or two some hair starts growing back 🙂
