        Hello!

I have a 10 month old polish male rabbit named Shippo, He is a free roam boy, neutered, and normally diligent with his potty habits.

However things can’t always be perfect, Shippo has been very clingy to me lately which ends up in him waking me up late at night cuddling or demanding me to pet him. Due to how cute and demanding it is, I have to gently nudge him off the bed after im done petting him and such, so I can sleep. I’m assuming he was angry at me and just peed on the bed to tell me “this is mine human”.

Then bought a dog house to put his litter box and things in, one so I don’t have to see a litter box when I walk into my studio. I am not sure Shippo likes his new area, I put his treats and things in the new litter box area to encourage him to like it.  That night my boyfriend came over and we normally just sit on my bed since I threw my sofa away. We all know where this is going SHIPPO PEED ON THE BED.

I’m not sure if Shippo is doing this to tell me he is the boss or if something is wrong? He hasn’t peed on my bed since the beginning of summer.

He’s not doing this to assert his dominance or anything like that, you’re not a bunny and he doesn’t see you as part of the hirarchy. Rabbits seem to just enjoy peeing on soft surfaces, even more so if they have a strong scent on them, so a bed is a prime target. Because of this, some rabbits just can’t be allowed on couches or beds unfortunately. I would keep him off your bed for a while to try and break the habit, but he might just go right back to it as soon as he’s allowed back up there.

I guess so it’s just strange he hasn’t done it in a long time, I rescued him in March 2020. I guess do our rabbits see us as family or anything like a dog or cat would? I have had tons cats, dogs, birds, horses, however a rabbit is new to me.

Rabbit’s don’t really acknowledge “family units”. Mothers will try to mate with sons, siblings will mate with each other… so the concept of family is not really registered as how “typical” humans may think of it. There’s a reason why, in order to bond two rabbits, you need to fix both and spend potentially at least a month systematically introducing them to each. They are definitely social animals, but establishing a life-long relationship can take time.

I might sound very bitter but…. rabbits are like the “stereotypical cat”, in my mind. Dogs are pack animals and will please the alpha and follow…. rabbits, I feel don’t really care, haha. You give them food and pets when they demand, and if you don’t, they will express that frustration. I love my rabbits, but…. I don’t think they’d do much for me, haha. They are prey animals, so they are wired differently to begin with than dogs or cats.

Thank you both for your guidance! I appreciate learning more about rabbits, especially since I’m a new rabbit owner. Hopefully Shippo and I can have a life long bonding relationship.
