So I am taking Pinky and Muffin to the vet to get them check ups as soon as I can find a vet in my area. We’ve contacted our vet that we take our dog and cats to, to see if they know where to find a good vet for rabbits. So as I’m waiting for a response, I thought I’d show you guys this photo of Pinky’s ear. I think it may be ear mites. I looked it up and the treatment would be drops in the ears to massage in. Are there safe ear mite drops we can get in the mean time? Or if it’s not mites will it be harmful? He shakes his ears a lot and scratches and grooms them. I’d also have to treat Muffin since he lives next to him right? In a separate pen, but I’ve been doing cage swapping. What should I do while I’m waiting to go to the vet? This is the best photo Pinky would allow me to get. You can see some red scabbing and greyish, dry substance. If the post didn’t lower the quality of the photo. Sorry about my nails, I haven’t had time to do them.

It’s hard to catch on camera but there is quite a lot of that greyish substance in his ear. I didn’t get to check the other ear yet.

Hmmm, I don’t know what ear mites look like, but my three ladies had some a while back. If they do have some, it would be my suspicion that your cats are bringing them in, that’s what my vet said was likely for my girls as well. Ear mites are extremely contagious, so if Pinky has some, then definitally treat Muffin as well. Once I got the treatment for it though, it cleared up quickly. 🙂

One way to find a good rabbit savvy vet is to go onto a website called House Rabbit Society, and they have a list of good vets in a lot of areas. 🙂 Hopefully, you find a good vet, and that there are no ear mites! Wishing you luck!

Thank you!! I’ll check out the house rabbit society.

I mean it could be my one cat but he only escapes occasionally. They aren’t allowed outside for safety reasons. Maybe my dog? He’s on medication for all that kind of stuff but I guess it’s possible he carried some in. Or Pinky could’ve come home with the mites when I adopted him a few weeks ago.

I’m glad that your bunnies got better! Muffin’s ears look pretty normal but a tiny bit of dryness deep down, but he’ll get treated too anyway if Pinky has them.

I can’t really tell, but if it is mites it is easy to treat with Revolution.

Obligatory PSA: never use Frontline or any product containing fipronil on a rabbit!

@DanaNM Thank you. Where do I apply it on him? And how much of it do I apply? And just once?

The vet will give you the doseage based on weight. You apply it to the skin at the nape of the neck. I believe that usually 1 or 2 treatments is enough.

@DanaNM Okay thank you! Should I stop cage swapping for now?

I don’t think so? Unless you find some other health problem or the vet suggests it? If it does end up being mites, they don’t look too serious from the pictures.

                            Hi,

Just trying to piggyback off of Moonlightbunny’s post. My Hazel and Lola sometimes have little bits of flaky skin on their ears. It usually looks like it’s been from where they scratched their ears. I don’t see any other signs of mites like crustiness or discharge or irritation. And although I have seen them scratch their ears, it didn’t seem like it was excessive. They are already on Revolution monthly because I let them out on the screened-in porch sometimes.

Do you guys think I should be worried about mites based on what I described? I’m not sure if I’m being overly paranoid or if I should take them to the vet.

Occasional skin flakes is not problematic as it could be dry skin, result of them shedding, result of them scratching, etc…

Ok, that’s good to know. I also realized it could be their litter. I put a little bit of that white fluffy paper bedding in their litter boxes. I’ll try to look more closely at it next time.

                                Thanks!
