our six yr old rabbit stopped eating a week ago, she also had two seizures. The vets asked us to consider putting her to sleep but we have nursed sick rabbits before and seen poorlier rabbits who have recovered. We are syringe feeding her and occassionally she will eat some veg but not eating hay or pellets. She is on antbiotics and pancur but we havent seen any change. Yesterday she started licking the brich walls and biting on the concrete floor outside. She even jumped into the coal fire to get at the coal. She has never shown this behaviour before so im guessing its related to her illness, a deficiency maybe? Nothing on line so wonderex if anyone else has experienced tbis.? I know if we go back to the vets they will be recomending putting her to sleep. She has lost a lot of weight but we really want to give her a chance. Any help would be much appreciated  tia

What was her diagnosis? And what are all of her meds?

Can you get a second opinion from another vet?

Eating inedible things like that is called “pica”. Apparently in rabbits it can be a symptom of enteritis: https://rabbit.org/journal/2-5/enteritis.html

Can you keep her inside? She shouldn’t be ingesting pieces of brick, concrete or coal. If it didn’t cause her health issues, it certainly will make things worse. Is there something poisonous she could have gotten into out there?

I agree with Dana, I would get a second opinion, a knowledgeable vet wouldn’t immediately recommend putting her to sleep without further testing.

Thanks for your responses. Yesterday evening we noticed she had fly strike. This has always been my worst nightmare and still cant get the picture out of my head. We took her to the emergency vets and the kindest thing was to put her to sleep. Luckily we caught it very quickly and she wasnt in any pain at that point. She was fiddled eith them. Vet said it wouldnt have been the cause of her illness and likely due to her poorly condition that she got it. She had a clean bottom so likely flies were attracted to her due to not being in great condition. We are truly heartbroken 💔

                  I’m so sorry. 😥

The vet should have noticed it the first time around. 🙁

Oh, I’m so sorry! 😥 You did all you could for her, alas she will have to cross over the bridge. It is hard when they leave us, but when they do, they will reunite with old friends over the bridge. You gave her a beautiful life, one to be proud of. 🙂

What helped me when I was in grief over my lost bun, was looking at pictures of her, and old memories. Laughing at her antics, smiling at her silliness, you have no idea how much just a simple laugh can do to lift the spirits, and smiles go far. 🙂 The hardest part of ownership is excepting when it is their time to leave us, it is a hard blow, we had good times with them, but we still want more. Know though, that she never truly left you, is still with you in spirit, guiding you along your journey that you set out here to accomplish. She wants to see you be happy so that she can rest peacefully amongst old friends without worrying about you.

We are always here, we understand what those fluffy faces mean to you, to all of us on here, they are the best companions. 🙂 We’re here, whether you need support, advice, or just someone to talk to, we are here. 🙂

Wishing you easy thinking and joy.
